I am a youth leader (volunteer) & really get frustrated at the lack of commitment. If all would participate, we'd have maybe 8 -12 kids, but there just doesn't seem to be steadfastness & we end up with 2 - 5 kids; & we're in a thriving/ growing community!

There's a nearby larger church that I heard has an earned "points" system where kids get points for each attended / participating activity, which earns them a chance at winning an ipod! Can you believe that, isn't that teaching them materialism & "bribing" them to attend? I just can't agree with the message that is sending.

any experiences with small groups ? recommendations?

I used to attend a small youth group when I was a teenager but the leader was pretty carnal and let us watch movies with nudity in them at youth group functions and it turned me off the whole thing. The guy before him was pretty good and used to take us hiking and stuff.

I was an intern for a Church here in Charlotte in the Jr. High department. I have some ideas if you want....we had nearly 200 in attendance.

What I had to do was plan fun activities, (i.e. camping, hiking, boating, fishing, movies) and weave the religious training into it. Camping was the best, at night around the campfire you pretty much had a "captive" audience.

we did that but a lot of it depends on what kind of leaders you have. They have to be very outgoing and nearly as hyper as the kids at times. I work from 9am till 10pm sometimes with ages 11-15 and fell asleep as soon as I openned my bedroom door. Its awesome though. I love kids, especially teenagers

that's another problem; the ages are from 4th grade to HS. I know that's not ideal, but if we did not do this, we'd have even less in attendance.
