I`m no expert, but the skullcandy models I picked up do what I need. $500 earbuds is just ludicrous.

I just bought a pair at Target for $10. If you turn the volume up over halfway it sounds like your at a red light next to a brother.

I've only used $10 headphones. I'm thinking of jumping to $20. I've read people talking about these $250 headphones and I can't fathom it.

On the other hand, shitty headphones have helped cause a heavy overuse in compression in music.

I've been using $30 over-the-ear Sonys forever, but I just recently started using the ear buds that came with my Sansa clip. They're pretty good, but I wouldn't mind upgrading a bit. I'm always tempted to try the Bose stuff, but damn. I just can't justify the funds.

My thoughts are if you are paying over $50 for some earbuds and listening to your music on an ipod, you're wasting your money.

Sansa clips have some of the best audio output going currently, way ahead of ipod anyway. And Sansa supports more lossless forms of music like FLAC.

Either way, like the first link shows, audio quality is much more subjective than video quality and often times the majority actually prefer a lesser signal. Spend your cash on video, just get some headphones that won't hurt your ears. Save your $500 earbuds and spend the money on some speakers at your house. Likely the music you listen to isn't high enough quality for you to tell the difference, or your your player isn't even capable of producing a difference.

If you're walking around with an ipod, your $20 headphones are good enough.

I got some custom silicone ear buds and put them on my cheap ear phones - knocks out most of the background noise and helps sound quality and (more importantly) lets you lower the volume so you don't make yourself deaf by the time you're 30.

how'd you go about getting custom buds?

I ended up getting Klipsch s2m for around 25. They were 15 cheaper than the ones without a cell phone controller. After getting the order out (I aven't gotten them yet), Amazon started pushing some Monster Turbo set of monitors that was supposed to go for $180 and they were now $60. Ehh. I wasn't going to spend 60 anyway.

a friend of mine sells hearing aids - he made the molds and sent them off somewhere - he gave them to me but said they would sell for about $100.

The're very comfortrable and secure - almost forget I'm wearing them.
