3 million a year more is an awfull lot of cash. I just can't get upset about this.

Damon jumps to NY -- CF spurns Sox for 4 years, $52M

By all indications, Johnny Damon will become a Yankee this week after he reached preliminary agreement on a four-year deal worth $52 million with the Red Sox’ fiercest rivals last night. The Yankees’ interest in Damon intensified dramatically over the last 48 hours and they floored the veteran center fielder and leadoff hitter with a contract worth $3 million a year more than the Red Sox’ four-year, $40 million offer.

It is believed Damon’s jump to New York caught the Red Sox by surprise as they had reiterated their ongoing desire to re-sign him during a late-afternoon conference call.

Team president and CEO Larry Lucchino said the team did not receive notification of Damon’s acceptance of the Yankees’ four-year offer until 11:55 p.m., more than an hour after reports of his decision first surfaced.

Damon, however, did say plenty about his impending move to Ch. 4’s Dan Roche.

“It was a very tough decision, but, you know, New York came after me aggressively and that’s what sealed the deal,” Damon said. “They showed that they really wanted me. I tried with Boston (to get) them to try to step up, but unfortunately they didn’t. And now I’m headed to New York, something that I wasn’t quite sure would happen but I’m very excited.

“The players were calling me and trying to recruit me. They did a heck of a job doing it. I’m with mixed emotions. I’m very happy to be starting a new career, and sad to say bye to some of the greatest fans in the world. Unfortunately, they had to see this day, but it’s time for me to move forward.”

Damon’s departure leaves the Red Sox with a glaring hole in their leadoff spot, a vacancy of more concern than center field. They have already inquired about Cleveland’s Coco Crisp, San Diego’s Dave Roberts and Seattle’s Jeremy Reed this offseason. Count on those talks to intensify.

Still, the Red Sox’ interest in those players was seen as a fallback option in case they could not sign Damon. There were strong signs yesterday, however, that Damon was being wooed seriously by the Yankees.

“He told me a lot of people are saying that the Yankees are not that interested but they are,” a current Red Sox said last night before word of Damon’s agreement broke. “He said both teams, the Red Sox and the Yankees, are offering him four-year deals.”

The difference between the offers was obviously significant.

“He made it sound to me that if negotiations were to be stopped today and he had to make a decision based on what the offers are today, he’d go to New York,” the anonymous teammate said.

Damon seemed to indicate his decision to join the Yankees was sudden and that the Red Sox’ surprise would be justified.

Asked if the Red Sox had tried to match the $13 million per year offer, Damon told Ch. 4, “No, I made contact with them. I talked to Tito (manager Terry Francona) and told them they need to really get going because if not, I’m going to be on another team. Unfortunately, Boston has their plans. I’m not sure if they knew that I meant it, but now I’m a Yankee, and hopefully they can go off and go get the other center fielders they’ve been courting for the last month or so.”

Damon had become as much of the face of the franchise as any member of the team, including David Ortiz, with his long hair, laid-back attitude and never-ending hustle.

“My message to Red Sox fans is I tried,” Damon said. “I tried everything in my power to try and come back, but unfortunately I know they’re going to be upset, but I’m always going to have a strong feeling about them. I’m always going to remember the great times, the World Series, the three out of the four years we made the playoffs.

“And I just want them to know I appreciate them and I tried, and that’s the least I can do. I know they’re going to continue to root for the Red Sox which they should. And I’m going to win another World Series. That’s what I have to do now.”

Now, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner will not only get Damon to cut his hair but have a bona fide leadoff hitter playing for him.

Dude, he's getting 12 million more dollars. Kinda hard to be mad at a guy for taking that. I love Johnny and all, but I wish I could buy stock in things like this contract is gonna look badd in 2 years.
