I have a 2 TB ethernet drive with windows xp embedded that won't boot. It's 4 500 gb drives on one partition.

the error is the system file is missing or corrupt... it won't boot to last known or in safe mode

I have basically 1 TB of data than I cannot lose...

So, I could just install a full version of XP Pro... When I boot off the CD, it gives me the option of installing on drive, c, d, e, or f... but the they all say partition 1, so I should be fine, correct?

Or should I try to run chkdsk and then try to repair the master boot record?

What does recreating the mbr do exactly? what would I lose?

the chkdsk option is best to do first. Repairing the MBR shouldn't have any effect on your data; recreating the MBR means the OS won't know where your data is, although it will still be there. You'd have to use data recovery software to get to it.

I can only get to a C:/ when I boot off the CD, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything when I type chkdsk...

Is there a data recovery software you recommend?

Are you using the XP Recovery Console?

No, it's a network drive, Windows XP Embedded is the name of the version of XP pre-installed. The only access you need to it is through a web browser, until now...

I have an external hard drive I tried to install XP Pro on, but the set up screen won't recognize it. The only other drive it sees is the USB external CD.

is there a way in the set-up to change it to boot off an external USB drive and install XP Pro on that, so then I would be able to get to the data?
