the 299.99 model is just dumb marketing. It's just an easy way to show they are the most accessable console, by price. Casual gamers won't know which one to buy, so they'll go for the cheaper one. When they get hooked, they'll end up getting all the accessories and wind paying more than $399.

You need the HDD to use the backwards compatibility, so all the installed base, as they call them, will need that to play the old games. That 20 gig HDD alone costs $99 according to MS. So it makes sense to get the $399 one.

Me, I'm getting both, but the ps3 will own this shit. Dual layered Blu Ray DVD's can hold around 50 gigs of stuff. Only the PS3 will have that.

The real problem is that microsoft hasn't even started producing the system yet. They don't want to say that we can have as many models as we won't then not be able to fill those orders. At my Gamerush we can only do 10 right now.
The hard drive also makes the system backwards compatible. It also comes with the dvd remote.

And Playa the latest reports have the systems having very similar graphics. I will buy both of them, even though I think the PS3 is all smoke and mirrors right now.

M$ has my wallet. One Xbox360 for $399, please.

I like the backwards compatability. Means I dont have to sell my (sports) game library for $20 total.

I think Microsoft is rushing it to try to get it out before Xmas. Ungood. The PS3 is gonna be god's gift to gaming. :twocents:

And HardHarry, the PS3 will be backwards compatible with all PS2 AND PS1 games.

Bill Gates Zaps Sony With Nov. Xbox 360 Launch
Greg Levine, .., : AM ET

Norman Rockwell 2.0: In the U.S., ancient tradition holds that Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate health and prosperity by gathering family to consume enormous amounts of gravy-soaked meats and sugary starches (see: "Fall's Most Fattening Foods").

But some will celebrate a "blessing" unimaginable in the 17th century. Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) said it will release the latest version of its Xbox videogame console on Nov. 22, two days before the holiday.

The House that Bill Gates Built said the North American Xbox 360 launch will be followed by a Dec. 2 release in Europe and a Dec. 10 launch in Japan.

This allows the software colossus to get a major shopping-season jump over Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ). The Tokyo-based media and entertainment giant currently leads the game market with its PlayStation 2, but isn't releasing the next iteration--yes, PlayStation 3--until the spring. Think everything's more expensive in the land of the rising sun? Think again: In Japan, the 360 will cost 37,900 yen, or some $345, as compared to the $399.99 the company will reportedly charge in North America.

David Reid, director of platform marketing for the Xbox line, insisted that the lower Japanese price had naught to do with the glaring fact that the first Xbox incarnation never took off in Japan quite like Microsoft had hoped. He said Gates' firm priced the game units relative to what similar devices cost in each nation.

Actually from what I've recently read, the PS3 is pretty on paper, but it actually has technology in it that won't be able to be used, and may be wasted long term. That's not saying I won't get it, but the article I read makes the gap between the 360 and the PS3 narrow IMO.

Well considering the PS3 will come out almost a year later than X360, I'd say it's a safe bet that PS3 will be "better." However, most of that depends on how well X360 sells. EA has a reputation of using the lowest tech and porting upward. If X360 is a big factor, their games will look similar on both machines.
