Browns’ Johnson disappointed by new trade talk|
    |By TOM WITHERS|
    |AP Sports Writer|
CLEVELAND (AP) — Unable to finalize a contract extension with wide receiver Kevin Johnson, the Browns have granted his agent permission to talk with other teams about acquiring the four-year veteran.
It’s the second straight year that Johnson, who had 84 catches for 1,097 yards and nine touchdowns in 2001, has been involved in trade rumors.
And he’s not very happy about it.
‘‘I’ve been affected by a lot of things the past year, to be honest with you,’’ he said. ‘‘I just want to play football. I love the game. I just love where we’ve come from as a team. A lot of guys who have been here since ’99 know there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
‘‘We stuck together through a lot. We stuck together as a family. You’d just like to be here for the good times.’’
Unless the Browns work out a deal quickly with Johnson’s agent, Tom Concon, , Johnson should be on the field for Saturday’s home exhibition opener against the Detroit Lions, in the newly created ‘‘Great Lakes Classic.’’
Johnson, the Browns’ best offensive weapon, recently turned down a three-year, $10 million offer from the club and is reportedly seeking a four-year, $13 million deal with a $5 million signing bonus.
With negotiations reaching an impasse, the Browns decided to allow Condon to contact other teams — but none in the AFC North. However, Condon may have trouble finding a good fit for Johnson because of other team’s needs and salary-cap concerns.
Any team interested in Johnson would first want a long-term commitment from the 26-year-old, and then would have to put together a suitable package for the Browns.
Johnson acknowledged that seeing linebacker Jamir Miller tear his Achilles’ tendon last week against Minnesota brought a new sense of urgency to his situation.
‘‘When you see a guy go down like that, you definitely want to secure yourself financially,’’ he said. ‘‘When you see a guy go down without anybody touching him, that’s pretty freaky.’’
Although Browns coach Butch Davis has said he won’t let Johnson’s contract become a distraction, it already is one.
On Thursday, quarterback Tim Couch was not available to speak about the possibility of losing his friend and favorite target for the past three seasons.
‘‘You guys know how he feels,’’ Johnson said. ‘‘As long as I’m in the huddle with No. 2, he’s going to throw me the ball. That’s the bottom line.’’

I never have understood why the Browns have talked trade with guy so much. It makes you wonder if there isnt a problem with his attitude or something. They have talked trade with him every year it seems.

Outside of the cap hit we'd take, yes. Moose has dropped far too many balls in the last year.

    >>would you trade for kevin johnson?

Depends. Third and 5th, yes. 2nd, probably not. He's worth a first, probably.

Two reasons - he's a FA after the year. That's why he wants out. Risky to bring in a guy you might not be able to sign.

Second, draft depth is great next year at WR.

He's a player. Probably a guy who could compliment Moose and really beef up the O. But can we afford to spend big money on a guy like this? Can we afford picks?

Can we afford to get into a bidding war in case he wants to go to a team that will allow him to showcase himself and/or get a ring?

    Probably not.

No. Not for less than a first and some other random pick.

  7. It would depend what we'd get in return. If we get rid of him for another WR its ok, but for another position no because that would leave a BIG void at WR. Id go for a Kevin Johnson Mushin Muhammad trade:D

They want a 2nd for him, so hell no.

But if he's gone next year anyway, so why not get something, like a 3rd.

I'd trade for a 3rd if we can negotiate a long term deal before the trade, and ofcourse he passes a physical.

    3rd & a 5th? No. Maybe a 3rd and a 7th or an 8th.

Carmen Policy is such a dick. Pay your star reciever like a star reciever. He doesn't want to leave.

The Browns are on the verge of building a championchip caliber team, if Carmen doesn't screw it up.

    Robert Tate

Robert Tate may be available also, He's a 6 year vet who came into the league as a WR but changed to DB, He also restructured his contract in Minnesota to be more cap -friendly (seems all the DB's from the D.Green era are being trashed) I might take a look at him here for a low round pick.
