Windows OneCare Live is basically automated PC maintenance - AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, and automation of all kinds of other things like Firewall, Microsoft Updates, Backups, defrags, disk cleanup, etc. It's a 5 minute install, and everything works out of the box. If you want periodic backups, you have to configure where you want them (very easy - to removable disk or CD/DVD) and then let it go.

You can signup for the beta today for free, and when it leaves beta in a few months, you'll get discounted pricing. It'll be a per-year price, recently announced to list at $49.95 (given that it includes AV and AntiSpyware, that alone is worth it)... Oh, and that's for up to 3 PC's at home - you don't have the pay for them individually :).

I am a little leery of opening your box to Bill Gates

You're a genius. If Microsoft wanted in your box, you're ALREADY RUNNING THEIR OS! what the hell is so interesting about you and your PC anyway?

    His 'box' isn't a PC. It's a server, dammit.

This is MSFT. MSFT bought Giant, bought Sybari, etc., and this is the first real release of that tech. First to consumers via this offering, then later in Windows Client Protection to the enterprise customers.
