    From ESPN:

"The Panthers and William's agent, Ron Del Duca exchanged proposals on Thursday and are expected to talk through the weekend. Williams has a base salary of $1.65 million, but his starting job could be taken away by first-round pick Julius Peppers. Williams wants to stay in Carolina, but the Panthers want salary-cap concessions.
Expect those talks to head into next week."

    The depth is needed...

We need him for cheap, though. Interesting.

    Yasinskas said this on charlotte.com:

The Panthers and the agent for defensive end Jay Williams have exchanged proposals for a restructured contract, but no deal is imminent. With rookie Julius Peppers set to start at left defensive end, the Panthers want Williams to take a pay cut.

Williams is under contract for this year, but his salary cap figure is $2.51 million. If Williams doesn't take a cut, he could be released and the Panthers would save $1.6 million in cap space.

    - Kind of stating the obvious, but there it is.

We shouldn't blink. 700K, same as Buckner. No more.

that's the way, yeah. No point in trying to find ways to dicker around and keep him, just go with the offer that's fair, which IMO is like you said, in line with Buckner's. If that's not good enough, Williams can go find the minimum somewhere else and he can start complaining about PT somewhere else.

    KFFL UPDATE

Panthers | Working On Williams - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
18:53 PT: According to John Clayton of ESPN, the Carolina Panthers continue to negotiate with DE Jay Williams on a new contract. He is willing to cut his salary from $1.65 million in half. Williams is working out with his teammates.

    In half.....that's great news

Sure. We are playing him 100,000 just for this minicamp.

With the report of us using Pep at both DE spots AND OLB, keeping Williams would allow us to move him around more effectively. Otherwise we'd be looking at moving Gilbert there in those situations.

ok, his base is 1.65, but he counts 2.51 against the cap, is the rest in signing bonus or what. would he still be making 1.825 this year? is that too much?

He made the bonus money in 2000, so that's done, it just didn't count against the cap until now.

I think the total he'd make would beabout $850k. Not too bad.
