Anybody listen to these guys? Really good Alt Country. Its not rocking music but rather driving or relax type stuff.

    Good stuff though.

I have the A.M. cd and I really like it. I have heard that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is supposed to be their best. That may be my next cd purchase.

    Summerteeth is good too.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is damn good though. It also has the best song they sing - Jesus, etc.

Holy crap, there is hope for this board!

Love Jeff Tweedy. I think he's trying too hard on YHF with some of the lyrics and songwriting, but it's still really good.

Being There is excellent though. "Sunken Treasure" on disc 2, about midway through....

Lex, I dunno about the "really well" part, but I think that was me. They are one of the many underappreicated bands that I usually champion.

Foxman - Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) & his sidekick in Uncle Tupelo (Jay Farrar of Son Volt) are largely responsible for the whole alt. country/no depression movement in the 90's. In fact, the no depression name came from an Uncle Tupelo album of the same name. Some people also call that stuff roots rock or americana. Several other bands are usually mentioned in conunction with them, including another favorite of mine, the Jayhawks. A spin off group called Golden Smog (kind of an all star group with members of Wilco, Jayhawks, Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, etc) was pretty good and WIlco did two critically acclaimed Woodie Guthrie tributes with British folk Singer Billy Bragg called Mermaid Avenue volumes 1 & 2. I think a minor league baseball team uses "California Stars" off of volume 1 as their theme song.

Jeff's been pushing Wilco farther and farther away from the sound of Uncle Tupelo and this first Wilco record ("AM"). On Summerteeth the band bought a bunch of old 80's synths and Jeff started channeling Brian Wilson. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is another step away from that sound, and I doubt you'll find another album that sounds like it. It's too eclectic. The upside of being eclictic is that most of the people I've played it for have found at least one song they really like, regardless of whether or not they'd heard of Wilco before.

Alt country isn't huge so there aren't many to compare too.

I will say that Beck's album Sea Change is similar (to steal a word from Harry, eclictic) but Sea Change is completely different than any other Beck album so I hesitate to compare those because I'm not a fan of other Beck albums.
Sea Change is a great CD though.

Wilco also sounds a bit like a softer R.E.M for a mainstream comparision although thats a stretch.
