Our body and soul is not our own- it was bought by Christ when he died on the cross. And only He should decide when our life is complete.

Going on that premise wouldn't it be equally as wrong to do things to keep someone alive?

    Exactly.

What pisses me off about this issue is that it gets taken over by the Pro-Life and Pro-Choice mobs. It's a different issue, folks. It was sickening to see all those folks, on both sides, getting so self-righteous in the Terry Shiavo case when all they were doing was trying to protect their positions on the abortion issue.

I was just answering the question of the thread.

    I didn't say I agree with it.

I don't know where my point of view falls and on which side of the fence. I do not believe in planning to assist someone to kill themselves. I guess my own hard-cord southern baptist upbringing comes into play there. But saying "Tuesday at 10am, we are going to OD Mr Jones...." is wrong ethically.

At the same time, the nurse in me does not believe in letting someone lay in pain. I believe in giving the pain meds to them to keep them comfortable. If, in the process of relieving that pain, they die- so be it. I don't consider that assisted suicide. I consider that as having mercy on another human being and keeping them comfortable.

Why? Mr. Jones is terminally ill and in pain. Mr. Jones is ready to die. Two doctors have said he will not recover. A psychiatrist has said he is competent to make this descision. What is unethical about helping him go with dignity? Would it be ethical to let him down a 5th of scotch and run his car into a wall.

planning his death is murder. keeping him comfortable and allowing the NEEDED pain meds do the job is a natural death.

Who decided 10am? The doctors? The families? You've obviously not dealt with families of dying people. THEY NEVER AGREE! There is always one family member who raises hell and wants them kept alive as long as possible (even as a vegetable) and assisted suicide is nothing but a list of lawsuits waiting to happen.
