    We've got:

    Smith
    Montgomery
    Goings
    Brown

We've got the depth behind Smith that a late rounder would immediately provide. Why sign a fifth guy? I'd rather use that pick on a blocking FB, and grab a premier RB in the early rounds *first* in 2003.

well, if we don't come away with a RB this year then I'm OK. Just as long as we don't spend more than one pick of the first four on offense, I'm allright with a receiver or a tight end or whatever. But only at great value.

It looks like you answered your own question to me. Ofcourse, there could be a good RB available after June 1st.

I would like to see the Panthers add a speed back to the equation. I am warming more and more to Clinton Portis being a Panther with the second rounder. I really feel that Foster might fit a bit better but his flaws place him below Portis IMO. Portis will never be a power back and carry the load (unless he can grow on that frame a bit more and add about 20lbs) - but he can be an explosive change of pace guy that can give you 15-20 carries and expand the effectiveness of the offense. If not Portis, I would look for Brian Westbrook in a later round (4th or 5th). Backs like Peterson, Gordan, Wells or Staley really don't bring anything new to the table for us.

This is becoming a 2 back league anyway. You need two good ones to cover yourself anyway. Even the big backs are getting injuries a lot these days. Having Lamar Smith and Clinton Portis gives the Panthers some nice weapons at RB IMO.

warming? You've been pimping Portis for months.

except for a bigger frame, and a solid running style. Pretty much the two things we've been looking to get.

Portis wouldn't be a late rounder.

There's lotsa talk of defense the first 2, and picking an RB later. My point was that we've already got 3 guys that fit the mold of a 'late round' rb.

I'd take Portis, hell I'd take foster but for the fumbles.

I saw a mock that had Duckett falling to us. I'll fart in chuch if that happens.

oh, if duckett is there at 2, he's worth it. otherwise, i dont want a rb in this draft. get the FB if possible.

the running back crop will be great next year and those guys have a much easier transition into the league than any other position. let smith play as the starter this season and give him the heave-ho at year's end in favor of a rookie back.

mVm, disagree as usual. I realize your sole purpose is to disagree with anything that make sense - but sorry, that doesn't make you smarter than anyone here.
Let me clarify for the slow one...
I cooled on Portis due to his lack of size quite a while ago but I am starting to believe he'll be a good back in the NFL. As for the other backs - all are similar to the backs we have IMO.

Meatpile - maybe you need an interpretor. I said THE SECOND ROUND for Portis. I don't expect you to be able to read - but at least ask your mommy. Ok.
