so, i'll go back to my original point -- what is your goal of an ongoing conversation with persinger?

i'm not speaking as a former observer employee -- i'm speaking as a person who works in the media.

would you believe that tar heel fans call up the observer and complain about the coverage their team gets? it's true. they do.

would you believe that florida A&m fans call up the tallahassee democrat (the only newspaper in the country that has a beat-writer for their school) and complain about the coverage their team gets? it's true. they do.

the florida state fans even call the local newspaper and complain about the lack of coverage.

my point is that EVERY super-fan thinks that their team gets hosed by the local paper at some point. you guys aren't breaking any new ground with your words.

when the best you can dish out is "that paper sucks" -- that's not going to win many arguments. my guess is that, for you, that point has gone past arguing. to you, it has become fact: the observer sucks.

if that's the case, then why read another thing that stan olson writes? why bitch about the tar heels getting a bigger photo than the 49ers? why even engage persinger (or whomever the sports editor is/was) in any dialogue?

there has to be a point, right? if your mind isn't going to be the one changing, then i'm guessing that you're trying to change someone else's mind.

seriously, if you want to get something changed, then you'll probably need to be a bit more civilized in making your point. i'm actually trying to help the situation here.

here are two questions i'd like answered:

    * has the observer ever done anything good as far as coverage of the 49ers goes?

    * can you answer questions about observer coverage of the 49ers without comparing it to any other team?

Damn, this discussion is almost as stale as whether or not Mark Packer's radio show sucks (which it does by the way).

Maybe I've read too much into Mike's past comments on coverage but the bottom line seems clear (from his perspective)......he does what he thinks is needed to SELL newspapers.

If I was a sports editor and was judged on my ability to SELL newspapers in this part of the North Carolina, I'd do the exact same thing he does.

As far as I'm concerned, this debate (the Observer dissing on UNCC, UNC-C and/or Charlotte) has gone on for at least 20 years because I wrote complaints to the big O sports dept when I was in school.

Sure I wish demand for 49ers sports was driven by the media, but I guess I've given up waiting for that to happen....especially in a sports market like Charlotte.

Charlotte has a very weak sports history (college & pro) compared to other cities its size. Does that make it a bad city?? Hell no. My point is I just don't see any legacys to Charlotte sports traditions that can be shared by the local media and generations of fans.............other than NASCAR.

now if we want to critique the paper... yeah, I'll agree. Sorensen is most worthwhile read in the entire paper IMO. Mr.Olson is a close 2nd.

Mary Newsome?? never heard of her.
Tommy Tomilson?? i've found one or two things in the last 5 years worth reading.
Editorial staff??? didn't know they had one.
movie guy??? no thank you, I'll take my reviews from other people.

Bottom line....the entire O is worth 5-10 minutes of my time on weekdays and maybe 15 minutes (there are color comics :)) on Sundays.

I dont think anyone on cusa or here is trying to get better coverage by this on going "conversation" with Mike P. I think everyone would like him just to admit that we get overlooked in our home town paper. Instead he chooses to show up on 49er boards and engage us in a contetious manner.

Personally, I dont want anything from him but a big glass of shut-the-fuck-up. He is not fooling anyone in my eyes and I would appreciate him staying out of 49er land all together. He doesnt give a shit about our team and that is clear. His act is old and he has now turned even his most staunch supporters agasinst himself.

I'm sorry Larry, that sports section does suck. This is no news flash, they get abused nationwide.

I never compliment Lefty, but it was nice seeing him bust Mike P in a lie.

well, it seems that the well has been poisoned on this topic. i haven't seen any comments that he's written in response on other boards. i can only vouch for what i saw on the old charlotte.com sports media board and the old charlotte.com 49ers board -- back when i was running the show over there. fyi, i haven't worked in the observer sports department in about 4 years.

let me ask you this, though: what can the observer do better, in terms of 49ers coverage; and, would it make a difference?

these topics are interesting to me. i've got no real dog in this fight, save for my curiosity as an autodidact.

Larry, I don't have a dog in the fight either since I'm an out of towner. However, it's been well documented that every other newspaper in C-USA cities provides far more pregame coverage than the Observer does. Several of us can provide links to that once the season rolls around. What bothers me is when we played a Cincy or a Louisville (ranked) in Halton a few years back and they sent a photgrapher to the Hornets game and there were photos from the other cities' newspaper photographer posted. This, mind you, was in the Hornets final days.

I find out far more info about the Niners from here and other sites than I can from the Observer. By the time it's written about there, it's been discussed and a dead topic here.

UNC Charlotte is an asset to the city of Charlotte, the Observer has always treated anything pertaining to the University as a stepchild. I see stories in the Greensboro and High Point paper about UNCC before they are in the Observer.

That being said, from what I can see, a lot of Charlotteans with ties to UNCC do not subscribe to the Observer newspaper.
