I really think that the point is being missed. The call was missed, the call did not in any way have a bearing on the outcome of the game, the umpire in question is human, the player in question handled it with class. The game of baseball will not and should not start allowing instant replay much more if any more than they do now. I seldom if ever agree with Bud Selig but this time he's right.

Didn't affect the actual accomplishment? Huh? only 20 players have ever had a perfect game in 100,000's of games pitched and one human error cost him the chance to be #21. Lost me on this one. While I never would want to see computers calling balls and strikes MLB needs instant replay in limited cases. They already use it for home runs whats wrong with at the very minimum giving managers 1 appeal a game or the umpire in the box reviewing close calls and relaying to the on field umps for certain to be determined plays. Not a knock on the umpires as the speed of the game makes it hard as hell. But to lose such an accomplishment that only 20 other players have ever done sucks. That and since only one other at bat that should never occurred, Selig should have IMO given him the perfect game. the Ump said he screwed up, the replays clearly show it.

I agree, baseball still shows America that it's the example sport. Take your time, do the best you can, show class whether you win or lose - it's not always about who's right or wrong.

you're totally missing the point. how is it any more of an achievement if bud selig ordains that the runner was out? you make it sound like the amazing part of throwing a perfect game is the feat of having your name written in a book someplace rather than the actual process of facing 27 straight batters without one making it to first base.

everybody agrees he pitched a perfect game. who cares if somebody goes back and erases all record of the 28th at bat? hell, if i was the pitcher, i'd market myself as the only guy to throw a 28 batter perfect game.

he did what he did regardless.
