Why aren't there more 'mixed' churches?

I'm not right in Charlotte, but closer to Concord, and I don't see many MIXED churches. I mean there are the white churches, and the black churches. I know I'm from CA and not the smartest cookie in the jar, but something is wrong with that.

Yep, Spud there is. The most segregated day of the week in America is Sunday.

I've seen a few integrated churchs popping up, particularly some pentecostal style churchs, but the mainstream is very segregated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Most churches in this area do not believe in inter-racial marriage. Black churches are not for it any more than white churches are for it. I think that is part of why they are for the most part seperate. Of couse you do not have to marry someone just because they go to your church but I still think it is part of the mindset.

You don't suppose history may have played a teeny part too, do you? Just a small one I would think.

I split this off the other thread, because I think it's a great point. Good on ya, Spud. :xyzthumbs

I'd like to think the main reason isn't racism, but culture. If you've ever seen a 'black' service, the difference between that and a 'white' service are opposite extremes. I may be a little naive here, but I want to believe that once a person gets used to a certain style of worship, they tend to want to stick with it. And I find that unfortunate -- both sides could learn from the other by sharing.

Our church is partnered with a smaller black church on the other side of town. Occasionally, we'll swap pastors, which always makes for an interesting Sunday. :D

We've got a few African American families attending now, but I wish we had more. :(

I have attended two churches since moving to charlotte in 96. Both actively try to diversify their congregation with little success. My current church has a sister church that is predominantly black that we help financially. Their members do come and participate in our outreach and other church programs but just not on Sunday. I am the only white guy on our church basketball team :xyzthumbs
