Who's your favorite player, both retired and active?

Retired: Lenny Dykstra - it all started with the '86 Mets, I was only 5...he was always running into the CF wall and getting all dirty, what more could a 5 year old ask for?

Current: Steve Finley - When I lived in Arizona I was able to watch just about every game, and he always seemed to be the one making the play and coming through in the clutch.

    good thread.

retired=ryan sandburg, just grew up watching the cubs, they were always on tv, great role model

active=paul loduca, hard scrappy catcher, does alot for the dodgers.

Retired - Ryan, Mantle (studying him is what interested me in the game) and believe it or not Gary Carter

Active - John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) and Brian Lawrence (San Diego Padres) I have my reasons... :)

retired = Dave Winfield (hard to pick just one here)

active = Probably Chipper Jones, but I really didn't want to pick anybody for todays crowed.

retired - Roberto Clemente ( I wish it was just retired) he's what the game was all about. Don Mattingly was a close second. I watched Mattingly play one awesome summer of Single A ball in Greensboro.

active - damn thats hard to say. I guess maybe Jim Thome - I've kind of followed his career since he was crushing homers for the Knights.

edit to add Phil Neikro to my favorite retired players list. anybody that can win 318 games throwing a knuckleball is alright in my book. He was always a pretty cool guy too - too bad he never got a world Series ring - of course same goes for Mattingly

Whitey Ford--Don Drysdale--Denny McClain--Bob Gibson--Nolan Ryan--Jim Bouton---May not have had a better record in some cases but these are some of the boys that the big hitters hated to face.

My favorite player of all time is a toss-up between Boog Powell--Brooks Robinson and Bobby Richardson. Altough I did like Mays and Clemente and of course Tom Tresh and Joe Pepitone and the Boyers (Clete and Ken) and can't forget Elston Howard, Johnny Bench and Hoyt Wilhelm. The there was Frank Howard and Hank Aaron and Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris and of course my namesake Stan the Man Musial. I've got more but I won't bore y'all. :)
