math - I can't decide if I like the old reasonable math that always tried to look on the bright side and support the Pack and trust things would work out or the new tough guy math that is trying really hard to talk shit

anyway - Roy was the ONLY coach offered the job that turned down UNC. For sure Doherty wasn't their second choice - but it was the media that fueled all the speculation as to who was next in line.

Brown really wanted the job but Baddour is the one that told him he wasn't a candidate. I can't remember Karl's exact situation but I know he publicly expressed how much he wanted the job but I'm pretty sure Kohl the Bucks owner told him he wouldn't let him out of his contract - Karl didn't have a clasue saying he could back out if ever offered the UNC job - he like everyone else figured Williams was a sure thing as the next UNC coach.

Fogler is the only one of the UNC guys that publicly withdrew his name. But like Brown and Karl he was never offered the job. The only other name I really remember much talk about was Majerus and again he was never offered the job either.

But after the press spent so much time speculating and following the saga it looked like the whole world said no and that Doherty was the last man standing.

But hey - if it makes the State faithful feel better about their school's plight to reinvent history then enjoy the fantasy.

they look bad because all of these big name, high profile guys...guys the louder percentage of NCSU fans want, have said no. Fowler is in a tough spot, because now, no one will make the fans happy, and the coach that reversed the fortunes of the program is in the desert now.

Because the unrealistic fans at your skool ran off a pretty good coach thinking that people would be lining up left and right for your job because they were delusionaly thinking it was a premier one. So, now that all of the proven, big name coaches (who you shouldn't have been going after anyway because they would not have been a good long term fit for your program) have turned you down faster than a dessert at an anorexics convention these fans have to face the realization that your program is not considered to be a premier one by the people that work in the industry.

As an added bonus to those of us who like to make fun of freakshows, we get to watch Fowler twist in the wind as he chases his tail trying to make everyone happy.

In the end though, all of those people turning State down is going to be to its benefit - as long as they hire a good, young coach who can make the program his own. Personally I hope that they do make the right hire - I like it when games in Raleigh mean something and are competitive much better than I do when Moo U. is just Clemson north.

Mike Brey turned down the job without even being offered. He heard his name start to be brought up and has already said "I'm not interested"

Duke's Lacrosse team is the only thing stopping State's basketball program from being the biggest NCAA joke out there.

I have a friend who is very well connected in college and NBA bball circles, (in fact he has escorted Roy, Lute Olsen, Calipari and others on recruiting trips to Oak Hill, Patterson, Laurinburg Institute, etc.) and he said that he heard that Calipari had been offered $2.1M, his staff was going to be getting big raises as well and was coming to State but then at the last minute State didn't want to budge on having final say in hiring/firing asst. coaches. There was more to it but he got called away and I haven't been able to talk to him since, but based on that and reports that Fowler changed the deal at the last minute with the WVa. coach and the Lavine screw up, I'm thinking Lee Fowler is in over his head. And if this is true, State is in big trouble for a while to come.
