We're getting off topic, but I just want to make clear that I don't consider anyone stupid because they're religious, of a particular ethnicity, or any other characteristic besides their actual demonstrated intelligence. Even State fans might be intelligent. What I'm trying to show you is that it's a mistake to embrace the belief that religion is false and that the only people who buy into it are those who are too dumb or too scared to "search for meaning" anywhere else. That's a really common attitude towards religious people, but it's also misguided and foolish. Whether or not someone is religious has nothing to do with how smart they are, and it's a mistake to treat all religious people like they're dumb.

i don't think anybody is stupid simply because they're religious, but i do think religious belief is a cognitive effort and is thus a demonstration of intelligence. i don't get how believing in something that doesn't make sense is off limits it's in the bible/koran/book of mormon -- oh wait -- scratch that last one, right?

I have always liked this Johnny Cash song. The lyrics are a simple way to explain how I feel about the existence of God. I can not prove it, I just know it.

There are some things I may not know there are some places I can't go
But I am sure of this one thing my God is real for I can feel him in my soul
My god is real real in my soul my God is real for he has washed and made me whole
His love for me is like pure gold my God is real for I can feel him in my soul

Some folks may doubt some folks may scorn
Well they can all go on just leave me alone
But ask for me I'll take God's part my God is real for I can feel him in my heart
    My god is real real...

When I need deep spiritual advice, I try to find it in songs too. Songs and fortune cookies.

I usually go to I Ching, a pendulum, or maybe a Quija Board. :smilejap: Sometimes flipping a coin helps.

guys, come on, no need for the sarcasm. He didn't say he got advice from the song, just that the song put into words the way he felt. This isn't the politics forum. It's pretty lame to be snarky just to be snarky.

If you just want to try and needle me and others who believe then go ahead. If you really want to know about God and whether he exists or not then you need to open your mind and seek him out.

I'm not needling you or anyone else. I believe in the existence of (one)God. I just don't always believe in what He's doing/or allows to be done. For the most part I believe that God has left us to our own devices, sorta a basic self determination. God gave us I Ching, etc. to "play" with.

Do you think if an atheist posted the reason he felt there wasn't a God was best summed up in an Ozzy Oszbourne song, he'd be given the same level of defense? It's not the politics forum, but when you're challenging someone's religious believe (or lack thereof), you at least owe them the benefit of your own thoughts. Otherwise, you might as well just post some random youtube clip as a response.
