Who do you think is the bets hitter to play the game?

Is it a guy with power, like Ruth or Aaron, is it a guy that can just hit it, say a Rose or Gwynn, or is it somebody who can do both, like a Williams or Bonds?

ESPN the Magazine recently stated that Barry Bonds is the "Greatest Hitter of all Time", but is that magazine really worh the paper it is prined on anyway?

    Let's hear from you!!!!!:D

i went with the splendid splinter. he hit for both average AND power. pure hitter i would say he and tony gwynn are neck and neck. power hitter, i go with bonds. the guy just never misses a mistake. but best overall hitter, ted williams.

Pure hitter? Gotta go with Teddy Ballgame.

.344 average in mostly in the era of integrated baseball. Second to Ruth in Slugging average.

I voted Williams. As an aside, I find it strange that Stan Musial doesn't show up more often as a possible answer to this questions. He was clearly a better hitter than Rose, Cobb and Gwynn.

Stan the Man does get blown off a lot. I know finishing second to the Yankees helped out Williams recognition, so did flying missions in two wars. Stan was too young to have served. I think Teddy is a notch above STan, but if I had to take Musial in an "all time fantasy draft", I wouldn't be too sad.

Lou Gehrig also doesn't get brought up enough. 14 seasons, over 1900 RBI!!!! He would've had more than Aaron's 2297 with at least four more years. I'm pretty sure his lifetime AVG. was .342. Third in slugging after TEd Williams.

Williams-average, power, rbi's and as has been noted missed a few prime years due to military service. Complete package as a hitter.

I voted other for Rod Carew, half the guys on the list I have never seen play other than on tapes so I eliminated all of them.

    Carew, Gwynn, Rose.

If you voted anyone but Williams, then you don't understand baseball. HE would have made a runa t Ruth's HR record if he hadn't missed 4 seasons to military service. He hit 380 at 38 for Christ's sake.

1943-45, then most of 52 and 53. Add 600 more walks, 500 RBIs, 750 more hits, 150 more homers, and that's being verrryy conservative.
Bob Feller is another guy who lost some serious stats to the War.

Fever, you can't be serious about Pete Rose. Carew and Gwynn were kind of funny also, but a lifetime average barely above .300 and not even 200 homers? Can't wait to hear you spin this one...
