    That's probably grain alcohol. It was a fav of spiking the punch at school dances in my day. If used sparingly, you supposedly couldn't taste the alcohol, while adding punch to the punch. You could make a knochout drink from something that already had alcohol(bourbon, etc) added.

    I used to make my grapefruit and vodka and people would call it a salty dog.
    Others say a salty dog is grapefruit and gin, grayhound's with vodka. I couldn't care less about salt on the rim either way.
