How do you lose a discussion??

I could see losing a debate or argument, but a discussion is the exchange of ideas right?

Then the Bible obviously served it's purpose. Unless you're gonna start/counter with other peoples interpretations of how the Bible is supposed to work.

Living on both sides has a way of giving eye-opening perspective. There's still a good bit of the world I haven't seen, but so far I've hit three continents and it's the same everywhere I go. People are people. What they believe or give lip service to believing means nothing if their actions, choices and deeds don't match up to it. That crosses all cultures and walks of life.

I'm not sure I get what you're saying. Explain, if you would.

Perhaps because when one enters into a discussion on a belief system, and another participant replies with quotations from scriptures etc, the discussion is halted somewhat because the other person may not hold the Bible (for example) in that (high) regard. For example - say, I post about reincarnation. Someone replies with a quotation from the Bible that suggests that there is a demonic relationship with that belief system - I don't agree with that...but I won't come back with a quotation, because personally, I don't hold the Bible in that high a regard. Also, I don't know the Bible well enough to want to enter into that kind of intellectualized debate and feel I have to defend my belief systems on something that for me, is not something that I hold as an absolute. I've tended to stay away from discussions regarding my personal belief systems, because of that. I personally find it arrogant and rude to "challenge" my beliefs and twist them into something they are not.

I know that this was not directed at me, and Fred and GHammer, I apologise for wading in on that answer. Fred might well have different reasons, but these are mine :).

William J - is there such a thing as a "selfish prayer"?

You're a smart guy, live(d)on both sides, which you think is exceptional, you figure it out.

I'll rephrase. I don't get what you mean about the Bible having "served its purpose" in regards to me.
