Spenser is the man that most of us wanted to be when we grew up. He is the knight.

Excellent pop corn reads. Usually can finish in no more than two sittings.

Avery Brooks was as close to the book Hawk as network TV would allow. Urich as Spenser? Naw. Never have figured out who should play Spenser. It sure wasn't Joe Mantenga in those horrible cable movies.

I saw the TV show long before I read the books, & I liked it; but the show didn't come close to doing the books justice. And the books get better & better as you progress through the series as a rule.

Robert Urich was completely wrong for the character as portrayed in the books. Too pretty, too "nice." I can't think of any star who would really fit the part. He'd have to be a big, rugged-looking guy, not really good-looking but with a strong presence--sort of magnetic. Someone who could pull off the intellectual banter.

Confederates in the attic, dispatches from the Unfinished civil war by Tony Horwitz. 1998, Pantheon.

A lot of things you know are wrong.
