The Sociopath Next Door, by Martha Stout. Both compelling & chilling.

    Some interesting points so far:

--Sociopaths are utterly without conscience or ability to feel real connection to others.

--About 1 in 25 people are sociopaths, about 4% of the population. By comparison, anorexia--3.43%; schizophrenia--1%; colon cancer--40 per 100,000, or about 0.004%.

--Most aren't the mass murderers that make the news. They destroy lives without remorse, usually without getting caught; & if caught for something for which they could be prosecuted, they are rarely convicted or punished.

--They're extremely hard to recognize before they've done significant damage. They tend to be among the most charming, charismatic of people--a la Ted Bundy.

    Creepy.

Read this if you like history. It hooked me pretty good, but I don't know if it would hook most folks like 'Da Vinci' did.

Everyone I know who has read/is reading The Historian loves it. I'm looking forward to reading it one of these days.

HB, I really enjoyed The Da Vinci Code, as well as its predecessor, Angels and Demons. Highly entertaining.

It's not nearly as skeery as Salem's Lot, but it's historically fantastic. I'm a sucker for historical fiction.
