I’m sitting in the press room of the Smith Center right now. But I have to be careful what I type. You never know if North Carolina coach Roy Williams might grow perturbed with one of my adjectives and have me forcibly pulled to a dark janitor’s closet for interrogation.

Not sure what I’m talking about? Allow me to explain.

With 6:45 left to play in Saturday’s 103-64 blowout of Presbyterian, North Carolina forward Deon

Thompson went to the free throw line for two shots. Thompson drained the first. And as he went to shoot his second, a fan approximately 20 rows behind the North Carolina bench stood and yelled.

    “Hey Deon, don’t miss it!”

    Thompson didn’t.

But to Williams that didn’t matter. His hypersensitive antennae had picked up behavior that he deemed inappropriate.

Heckling? At a basketball game? Lord no!

Flustered by the taunt, Williams spun around and scanned the seats for the culprit. The heckler easily identified himself, standing up, and pointing to the Presbyterian College logo on his white golf shirt.

That would help explain why he wanted a player from the team he wasn’t rooting for to miss a free throw. But for Williams, it didn’t matter. A guest in his arena had been disrespectful and he wasn’t going to stand for it.

He summoned John Dubis, a member of the Smith Center personnel, and told him to have the fan kicked out of the building. Dubis in turn sent two law enforcement personnel up to the heckler and a third came down from the concourse.

The flustered heckler asked aloud why he was being thrown out. There wasn’t much of an explanation. Instead, he was led dragged out of the row he was sitting in and promptly shown the exit.

Multiple Carolina fans sitting in the vicinity of the heckler said that all they had heard
the Blue Hose fan yell was “Hey Deon, don’t miss it!” There was no profanity, nothing thrown. Just an opposing fan sitting in seats designated for Carolina backers shouting out with glee.

Williams’ explanation for his outburst: “I don’t think anybody should yell anything negative at our players. Period. Let’s don’t make it a bigger thing than it is. But I just don’t think anybody should yell negative things toward our players (when) you come in on our tickets to watch our game.”

Carolina players laughed about their coach’s blow up.

“That’s some head honcho stuff right there,” said point guard Larry Drew II.

Added Thompson: “That’s a lot of pull around here, huh? To get somebody kicked out of a game. That’s pretty impressive.”

Asked whether he was surprised by Williams’ reaction, Thompson shook his head.

    “Nah, that’s typical coach.”

    My reaction: weak.

    Weak, weak, weak.

    There’s no way around it.

Williams’ reaction was overblown and totally inappropriate.

UNC sports information director Steve Kirschner tried to administer the predictable Tar Heel spin, claiming that the ejected fan may have been intoxicated.
But how in the world would Williams know that from 20 rows away while coaching a game?

On press row, the “Hey Deon, miss it!” line was the only taunt that was audible from that fan the entire night.

As for those UNC fans who will blindly defend Williams’ reaction, ask yourself this: if Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski had pulled the same stunt at Cameron Indoor Stadium, how would you have viewed it?

    As arrogant? Overbearing? Dictatorial?

And doesn’t this set a new standard for all Carolina games, giving security at Maryland and N.C. State and Duke every reason to eject any Tar Heel fan who heckles in their arenas?

We all know one of Williams’ biggest weaknesses at times is his hypersensitivity. And on Saturday night, it got the best of him. He should just admit that.

But you can’t have a visiting fan tossed from your arena by police then request in the most ironic of ways, “Let’s don’t make it a bigger thing than it is.”

Listen, when Roy's mom was working 11 jobs so he could have a coke, he learned a little bit of impatience.

    Be easy, it's Roy dadgummit.

I mean, it's not like he'd write a book, or be in commercials like coach k. jeez.

after watching that video, roy looks like a pretty big douche. what team hasn't had people heckle their players before? what a little bitch.

I hope this story blows up huge. I would love to see Roy get flustered while his team is getting heckled all over.

I know the Crazies will have a field day with this one.

    What a douchebag.
