I didn't see the game, but so far it sounds like this is the kind of game that makes you want to punch a hole in the wall. God knows I've been there enough the last 10 years or so.

Was it a blow-out or was it one of those where if they'd played just a little bit better it might have turned out differently?

Shit. I just looked it up on ESPN. Not that State was up that late, but they should have won that game against BC. This game sounds like that. Fucking sucks.

    • After Mitchell Baldwin's bank-shot jumper with 2:29 left put the 49ers ahead 44-36, the Billikens needed 19 seconds to free Izik Ohanon for a layup. Score: 44-38.

    • Curtis Withers' jumper was deflected and the 35-second shot clock expired. Withers blocked Chris Sloan's shot, but Saint Louis retained possession and Sloan got a layup with 1:05 to play. Score: 44-40.

    • Basden, fouled with 53.4 seconds left, missed the first shot of a one-and-one. Butter Johnson tied up Josh Fisher in a scramble for the rebound and Charlotte had the possession arrow. Basden, fouled again, hit one free throw but missed a second. Score: 45-40.

    • With 32.6 seconds remaining, Basden lost his balance for an instant as he rushed to the wing to defend Reggie Bryant. The slip gave Bryant an opening and he hit a three-pointer. Score: 45-43.

    • Baldwin, fouled at 29.9 seconds, missed the first shot of a one-and-one but Charlotte retained possession. At 22 seconds, Withers had trouble getting control of an inbounds pass and the 49ers turned it over.

    • Sloan got the ball at the foul line as the clock ticked under 10 seconds and rolled to the basket. He scored to tie it at 45, was fouled by Baldwin, then made what became a winning free throw with 9.7 seconds left.

I believe it was Baldwin that put us up 45-40.

Here’s my biased account of the last three possessions:

Withers, instead of holding onto the ball with 22 seconds left, tried to dribble. He was fouled, no call, and turned it over.

Baldwin made a stupid reach in foul; the ref gave Sloan NBA style continuation and counted the basket.

Withers drove the lane and was fouled by two players on the way up, and thus missed the potentially game winning shot.

Gotta close out these games. Same song a lot of the year...gotta be able to put nails in the coffin. Can't just get up for the games that have baggage.
