It depends on the severity of the tear, but it would be just as torn next month or year as it is now, so he would likely require it to play football. Or he would have to wear a brace.

Why don't you ask your wife if acls grow back.

Rob Garza, former RG for the Falcons, went out a couple of years ago with a torn ACL. He played last year with a knee brace. This offseason, he visited the Ravens and they put a multi-year contract on the table (I think 5 or 7 years?) pending a physical. His physical revealed that he had no ACL, it had plain disappeared. The Ravens jerked the offer off of the table, and he took a one year deal with the Bears.

Ever hear of a graft? graft is not a "drop-in" replacement for the natural ACL. Rather, it first dies, then functions as scaffolding upon which a surrogate ACL eventually grows. The surrogate ligament (once incorporated) harbors a structure that has many of the features found in a natural ACL, most notably parallel collagen fibres and a blood supply. Growth of nerve endings into the nascent ligament would of course be expected, albeit whether such growth is sufficient to be useful is a different question altogether. (Incidentally, many doctors prescribe various types of functional braces and neoprene sleeves for their proprioceptive benefit)… despite the expected regrowth of nerve endings into a reconstructed ACL, whether or not tangibly useful neurological connectivity occurs is still the subject of research.

That assumes he had a partial tear, right? How long does that take? Think it would be strong enough for the NFL or just OK for beer league soccer?

Uhm ... no. I said immediately after the injury that they better not even try putting Jenkins back in because Weeks 2-17 are a hell of a lot more important collectively than Week 1. Jenkins' injury looked significant at best, so I didn't want any part of him coming back in the game, and obviously the fact that he couldn't walk off the field by himself after the second injury suggests that it somehow did make things worse.

It depends on the characteristics of the tear. Theoretically you could sit out 2-8 weeks (depending upon the severity) and be at least 80% of what you were. You're still at an increased risk of tearing the entire ligament, but it's a greatly decreased risk compared to continued stress immediately after the initial tear.

So you are talking about all the full replacement options. Yeah, I'm familiar with those.

If so then I'll give you your point.

Ligaments take much longer to get strong than muscles do. I wonder if Jenks letting himself get completely out of shape the last 2 offseasons, and then going on an intense get in shape program means his muscles were stronger than his ligaments.

It was Jenks call to go back in. He felt he could go, the trainers (without benefit of an MRI which can not be done at BofA--no facilities) braced, taped and wrapped the knee.

Folks, move on. Jenks was done on the first series, and didn't know it. He said he could run, shuffle, c-walk, all thing he did before the injury. No one knew FOR SURE the extent of the injury.

Quit looking for blame, and look for ways to win without him.
