What is the strongest unit on the panthers

Discussion in 'Carolina Panthers' started by Tiorted Snoil, Aug 2, 2002.

  1. I'm talking DL, OL, LB, DB, RB, WR, TE, and QB. To be honest, I don't see a strong unit in the bunch. Maybe if Foster isn't a fumbler like he was in college then RB.

Most teams have at least one or two units that you could consider strong....I just don't see it on this team.

Of all the teams in the NFL, the Panthers have to have the worst CB situation in the league.

I think we will pretty damn good at LB this year.

    I'd say DL or LB.

Best is obvious IMO: 2 Pro Bowlers on Special Teams last yr
    TE is very deep too.

Worst: At first you would think CB but WR without Jeffers is my choice. Virtually no depth at WR to speak of. At least there are veterans at CB.

Without a doubt, offensive line. Mitchell and Stuessie are top line players. Nesbit played well between them, Jeno James is giving Donnalley, who was solid before going down with injury, a big run for his money. So we even have a little depth here.

Recievers, not strong. We will see if Weinke’s shoulder holds up, which to me is the biggest question around him. Running backs, wait and see. I can say it’s stronger than last year, and more will be asked of it. Smith is an upgrade over Huntley, and Foster is an X factor. And I like Hoover as an H back. Good hands, and he’s strong.

Defensively, linebacking is above average, defensive line is a question mark, I need to see them play well for myself, particularly vs. the run. Secondary is an obvious weakness.

Based on what I have read from the camp reports, it sounds to me that running back is one of our stronger positions. I like what I am hearing about Smith working his butt off to keep the starting position.

Of course a running back is only as good as his O-Line, just look at the Broncos.

agree on OL. Three key players and two that can basically be nudged along with coaching and scheming.

safeties are the other key unit, IMO, it's where almost all of our defensive plays came from last year and this year, just like the OL's ability to run block, we'll see a lot more use of the safeties' range, hitting ability (yes, I am including Grant), and coverage skills.

I wouldn't necessarily mention LB or DL. Both units are faster, especially with Peppers, Fields, and a lighter Jenkins, not to mention taking the slow to react and sluggish Towns out for Morgan inside. Basically gives us four guys who can run a 4.6. Right now I think we could pit Morgan, Fields, and probably Peppers against Cousin, Howard, and Jenkins and have the big men win the foot race.

But while attacking schemes and speed are great, I still don't know that we can take what we will dish out - in other words, the only spot we're deep at is DT and none of them have ever shown to be above average against the run. To have a team pound on us won't be in our best interests, though having Morgan coming off a block better should help. Reports of Peppers being able to hold contain help already.

But in the end I don't know that there are enough gaps that we can hold with the man we're using in that gap. Too many holes.

The safeties will definitely be more involved this year. I see a real problem with our defense though. With the weak corners we are going to be vulnerable to the run. With DT's that have been poor at stopping the run, ouch! The linebacker group better be ready to step up to the plate.
