NCSU star Julius Hodge investigated for attempted sexual assault

DENVER - The Denver Nuggets' top draft pick this year, Julius Hodge of North Carolina State, is under investigation for attempted sexual assault, police said Monday.

A 37-year-old woman filed a complaint with police Thursday alleging Hodge attempted to sexually assault her at his condominium, Denver Detective John White said. The alleged attempt happened at about 11 p.m. Wednesday, about 12 hours before the complaint was filed.

Hodge was not arrested and White said he is cooperating. White refused to release additional details.

"The allegation is completely false. Julius has not been charged with any crime and we're confident he won't be," Rick Kornfeld, one of his attorneys said in a statement. "We are cooperating with the Denver District Attorney and Police Department, both of whom we believe would agree this allegation is baseless."

A team spokesman did not immediately return a phone message left after business hours.

In a statement released by the team, general manager Kiki Vandeweghe said: "We encourage people not to jump to any conclusions. We are confident that he will be vindicated by the facts."

Denver used its first pick in June, No. 20 overall, on the North Carolina State guard.

Hodge averaged 15.8 points and was the third player in Atlantic Coast Conference history - following Duke's Danny Ferry and Florida State's Bobby Sura - to top 2,000 points, 700 rebounds and 400 assists.

Denver police: Hodge interview coming soon
DENVER (AP) — Police said Tuesday they plan to interview Denver Nuggets first-round draft pick Julius Hodge in the next week about allegations of sexual assault. Hodge, 21, is under investigation after a woman filed a complaint last week. Hodge returned to Denver this week after a weeklong road trip with the Nuggets.
"He has been very compliant, very cooperative," Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. "We've spoken with his attorney numerous times. It's just a matter of scheduling time for him to come in."

Both Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe and Hodge's attorney, Rick Kornfeld, have called the allegations false and baseless.

Jackson said police will decide whether to pursue charges after the interview.
