    what makes this thread great...

...and i am not trying to piss off cub fans here, is stuff like this--the logical way of looking at things. take this copied post from page one of this thread....

"exactly, you guys bustin this fan are crazy. the ball was in his lap and EVERY single human would of done the same thing. Hell the whole section tried to catch it. Moises Alou F'd up, those outfielders are supposed to call the fans off the way you do a another player. As he approached the ball he could yell I got it or don't touch it.

The Cubs had plenty of opportunity to close the deal and pissed down thier leg."

True. Couldn't agree more. But coming from a native of chicago perspective, you have to factor these things into the fan getting in the way (I wont call it interference because he did not reach into the playing field).

1945-The Goat (you probably have heard this story now a zillion times, so I won't repeat)

1969 collapse--funny thing about the collapse (and chicagoans know this), when the Cubs still had a chance to win the division that yeaer, a late seaosn series with the eventual champion mets would be played at Shea Stadium. A BLACK CAT stood directly in front of the cubs dugout, stared at the players (I beleive Ron Santo specifically) and then darted down their steps and into the clubhouse.

1984- Leon Durham's error in San Diego. Runnign joke was Durham was an alleged cocaine fiend....folks in chicago said he was dreaming of snorting the baseline, instead of making the play.

1989--Will Clark demolishes Cubs. Clark slugged Giants to series that year.

Now in all of those instances, only 1 showed where a team beat the Cubs. I know they all beat the Cubs, but CUBS FANS DON'T LOOK AT IT THAT WAY. They ALL think they are cursed. They ALL think there is a conspiracy.

Granted, the Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908, or even appeared since 1945, but if they happen to win game 7, advance and win the whole thing.....what will we have to talk about?

I'm not really blaming the fan for the 8 run inning. I was just looking at the fact that this "regular guy" is now a part of this huge controversy, and it took all of about 5 seconds for his life to change forever. He probably wishes that he could turn back the hands of time.

Now lets look at this from another perspective. Baseball is different from any other game. You cant just run the clock out and sit on your lead. You must get those final outs to finish the game. EVERY OUT you let slip through the cracks, errors too, just gives the other team more opportnity at scoring. From a players and coaches viewpoint you can trace big rallies, loses or whatever back to a mistake or some quirky play that "opens the flood gates" for the other team. Players tend to get a little panicky when they're a few outs away and weird things happen, its a baseball thing and you could just feel this one comming as soon as that happened. No he is not directly at fault for the 8 runs, but you can trace the Cubs "bad juju" back to that event.

The ball was still outside the stands when he reached for it! It was nowhere near his lap! So that disaster could have been avoided easily!

I did say earlier that the Cubs shot themselves in the foot left and right! The fan was not the one who dropped those easy outs or pitched all those bad pitches, etc.! But still when your team is about to put the opponent away, leave things alone!

I hope that fan has bodyguards for the next few months! Cause, I know there are some people out there that want to do serious damage to him, especially those that gamble on these games!

I really wan't bustin' the guys chops too bad - I really don't blame him for going for the ball - it was just instinct - but I knew as soon as it happened - the both the fan and the Cubs were in trouble.

You don't give a team four outs - and you could just feel the momentum swing on that play.

Too bad he didn't at least get the ball - if the cubs end up losing tonight some Cub fan would probably pay a fortune for it just so he can burn it to get rid of "the curse"

The reason the Marlins scored 8 runs in the 8th inning is the Cubs let that fan trying to get the ball get in their head. They were so upset about it they couldn't concentrate on what they needed to be doing.

I am not angry at him anymore! But I am upset that the Cubs are letting it get to them as you said!
