Yep. The 2 and 4 would hinder next year's draft (if they were looking for a package, it'd probably take a 2, 3, and maybe a little more) as you hope for starters with those picks but you won't find Jammer or comparable with any pick next year. Getting Jammer without losing the #1 pick is worth trading away most of the draft.

yes but they could do a sign and trade... as long as an agreement is reached between Jammer and another team San Diego can then sign him to a matching deal and trade him to the team he reached the agreement with.

I don't think the Panthers would have the bunk to sign him. He'd count against the rookie pool wouldn't he?
Either way, He'll sit for a while and sign latter in the year. $900K isn't all that much in respect to the total dollar amount...at least that is what the Chargers are banking on.
I don't think Jammer is out of line, the Chargers are just being stupid!

I may be wrong, but I believe the NFL makes an exception to the Rookie cap when you bring a rookie in via trade

Rookie cap is allotted based on the value of drafted players and only affects drafted players. It also has nothing to do with the salary cap, which would be the actual worry in this case.

I see, I was thinking that BOTH caps would be in trouble. Thought it was more of a cap within a cap and a trade would not matter, since he's still a rookie. I know we've pretty much max'd the rookie cap and aren't far off of the overall at this point.
What if we traded Gilbert and a 2-4? Gilbert is on his last leg, but they get a body that can give them some reps on the D-line. It's a little far fetched, I know...but a guy can dream!
