If he is saying publicly that it is a possiblillity that he stayss LT, then it's not a smokescreen. There has to be a motivation to trick.
They may have tricked Wharton into accepting good guard money to play tackle if anything.

Besides press and message board speculation, are there any quotes from the staff directly implying that Gross will be LT and Wharton LG?

Even in that article, Chandler states:

'Ideally, the Panthers would like to start a new draftee at right tackle, move Gross to the left side and shift Wharton to left guard.'

    Really? Says who?

What else do you think Fox was referring to?

Sure he may say but every indication is that they consider moving him to guard.

edit: I see what you are saying about Gross to LT now and I agree, seems to be speculation

Wouldn't moving Gross to LT give him cause to ask for even more money?

Honestly I thought Wharton was good enough at LT. He struggled a bit early on but he was coming off knee surgery. By the end of the season he was playing well at LT. Gross is better at RT than he is at LT. I am not sure he is as good as Wharton is at LT. It might make more sense to try and get a stud at guard in the draft and leave our tackles alone.

The only real reason to try and get a tackle in the draft is that this draft has a lot of talent at tackle. I am not sure that Wharton at LG and Gross at LT helps us though. They both are probably better where they are.

Actually I agree Wharton > Gross at Left Tackle, and its always made me wonder if Wharton > Gross at RT too.
