"Like it or not, Weinke is the quarterback for the foreseeable future because of his incentive-heavy contract. The team is going to do everything it can to help him succeed."

This is a quote from today's Charlotte.com. Why would an incentive-heavy contract assure Weinke is our QB? It seems to me that an incentive-heavy contract would make it easier to put him in second slot because then we would not be in a position where we were paying outrageous sums of money for a backup. What are your thoughts?

    Welcome, NC
I think "incentive heavy" means he gets more money if he performs well, yardage, completed pass percentage, TD's, etc.. Therefore we would pay him more money for doing well, but don't have to pay him as much if he doesn't perform well. If he ends up sitting on the bench, he won't get that incentive money, meaning we'll pay him less. I may be wrong, I don't know that much about contract terms.

He's already activated most of the clauses in his contract... he did that last year... so he's already making 1rd Pick money even though he was drafted in the 4th

not only that but he's by far the most physically able and ready player we could have, short of drafting another QB first round this upcoming year - and that would mean 2004 before we'd have a guy able to be a consistent starter since I don't really believe Leftwich or Ragone are going to come out gunning from day 1.

The team is probably looking at a five year window with Weinke given his age and now his injury history (neck and shoulder). Th Fasani pick kind of surprised me from the jump. Next year's crop of QB's has the potential of matching the '83 class in terms of guys going in the first round. We'll probably looking at a top 10 pick anyway, so there'll be some one there if Weinke isn't the answer.

I think we should have went WR instead of Fasani. There were a couple of guys still out there that could have helped us.

Don't get me wrong--I want Weinke to be our QB. I think with the new offensive philosophy and the attention that his shoulder has gotten in the off-season, he is going to show a lot of improvement over last year and I was really happy with his showing last year until he was injured.

But I still don't see how an incentive laden contract insures that he will be our QB of the future. Brain, does the fact that he triggered the incentives last year carry over into this year? Maybe that's what he meant by his comment in the article.

yes because he counts more against the salary cap now... if he doesn't perform the Panthers wasted a ton of cash... I expect him to do a LOT better this year... I think he'll be the KEY to a surprising potent offense this year... not sure WHY I'm thinking it'll be such a good season, but I'd like to stick with my optimism

I just wish one day owners had the right to subtract money for excessive turnovers and lost games... guys just might get more motivated.

Hopefully we'll get a peak at Fasani in the pre season, hopefully with the first team....

wouldn't that suggest Fasani deserves a look as the first string? he's done exactly nothing for anyone to think that - other than that he's not Weinke.

Sorry - Weinke's the starting quarterback. No matter what happens with anyone else, save for injury there's no real reason Weinke wouldn't be starting all season. Peete will undoubtedly get the generous portion of the preparation as the backup since he's the likely replacement for in-game situations.

You are correct! But to me if you ink a contract and make the team, you deserve a look with first team material in a preseason game. I have said this for years... has nothing to with who the QBs are in camp. I'd just like to see each guy play first team... its the only way you can draw any rational conclusion during the preseason.

And since (In the minds of some experts) Winky did not do much in the way of planting that seed of confidence in the Media... I'd say we owe to our self to look at whoever is in camp.
