I'd be willing to bet that Weinke would hit ALOT more escalator clauses this year were he to be the starter.

    WP? Anyone?

This would explain his benching, and even demotion to 3rd string.

If our new staff doesn't like him, make him #3, give Peete the reigns. About 8 games in, when we're 0-8, let Fasani have at it. See how he does. If he's good - we're good. If not -

    LEFTWICH!

The funny thing is I think these boneheads are going to get their wish. Peete won't make it more than 1-2 games, then Fasani will be in. What the Hell, Weinke was baptised in fire, why not Fasani. I swear the Panthers are completely unpredictable.

You don't bench a guy just because of his escalator clauses. That would be just stupid.
If Weinke or Fasani play well enough to EARN said escalators, they deserve them.

Not if you plan on dumping him the fi9rst chance you get.

But why dump Weinke? He's at least a good back-up, if not an average starter...and not overly expensive. The guys learned three new systems in as many years. That's not easy to do.
I'd start out with Weinke, Peete, and Fasani...in that order. If Weinke screws the pooch, flip flop him with Fasani. Peete should not see the field, unless our starter gets hurt.
That said, I am not going to scoff at the idea of Peete as the starter. He hasn't had many reps in this offense...but neither have the others. Peete has some vet savy and a pretty good head.
Let's face it, of the three we have, Fasani is the only one with the ability to possibly win a game for you. However, that same ability opens him to the other side of the coin. I'd rather take THAT chance and not put so much on our Defense.
Jesus, looking back over this...I am one confused MF!!!

Dude, Peete is getting the start. Not Weinke.

Peete. Not a pass in the regular season since 1999. Hasn't started since Collins was a Panther.

Something must be up. Something with Weinke we don't know about.

Probably if he's the starter this week he activates the mother of all escalators in his contract. Actually for wienkie it's not a bad deal, with no one in the back field, the defense is going to be head hunting every play, and the panthers line hasn't been great about keeping weinkie off his back. Peete'll be broke in a couple of games.
