    WEINKE ON THE WAY OUT?

A league source tells us that new Carolina coach John Fox has decided to bring in a new potential starting quarterback after the 2002 season.

According to the source, Fox doesn't view current starter Chris Weinke (or any other signal-callers on the roster) as the long-term answer at the position.

Fox's concern, however, is that drafting a quarterback in 2003 necessarily will entail a learning curve, which will prevent the Panthers from realizing their full potential for a few years. Thus, it's possible that the Panthers will look for a free agent who can come in and take the job next season.

so what do you make of this article? i kinda find it hard to believe. doesn't make sense that Fox would be making this decision now unless he's just totally convinced that weinke is not the man. and who in the hell would he tell this too that would then broadcast this around? even if Fox isn't enamored with weinke, i wouldn't think we would have the cap room to get a FA QB worth a damn.

maybe Fox thinks weinke is too comfortable and needs a little fire in his britches .... so he let this rumor start. i have been crying for some passion in his game. maybe this could do it.

*shrug* they're putting a 30 yeard old QB out there with only one season under his belt. it's doubtful he's going to improve too much, so bringing in a high quality QB in the draft next year really isn't a surprise...

Actually, the article says FA, not draft.

    Whatever - that's non-news.

FACT - Weinke was the second worst starter in the league last year

FACT - We went 1-15 last year

FACT - John Fox had nothing to do with bringing Weinke to Carolina

FACT - It's preseason. If Weinke plays well in 2002, he's in. If not, he's out, regardless of what Fox is thinking right now.

    Ha. Good one.
Tom Brady is one, unless an extention is reached. Aaron Brooks, unless they can get an extention. Jake the fake. Flutie maybe.

This is Weinke’s year to show Fox he can be the starter. If he does, then the plan is to go with him, and hope that maybe Fasani can grow into a backup. If neither happens, we might get a FA.

I can't see free agency being the way to go. We'd set our hopes on getting something of worth, and then we'd end up with Testaverde.

Weinke's got this year, maybe next year. Sure, we'll look, but then we'll realize we're still pretty much in cap hell and ride it out. Drafting a QB will more than likely be the direction we go if there is going to be a change made. Why pay big bucks for mediocre talent?

Flutie is about 40, Testeverde isn't much younger. Brooks will want big bucks, as will Brady and Plummer. Not in our best long run interests. If the QB class coming out next year is flooded with underclassmen as has been rumoured, that will be our best bet.

I would say it all up to Weinke. If he bombs the Panthers will be looking for a QB - that I do believe. However, if Weinke does bomb then we are at the top of the draft next yr in a great QB year. We should draft one if thats the need. A high priced FA QB that couldn't cut it elsewhere won't work for me.
