We now have a running game - how?

Discussion in 'Carolina Panthers' started by PanthersReturn, Sep 25, 2002.

  1. I've been more impressed by Lamar Smith than I could have imagined when we signed him.

What is the foundation for our new-found ability to move the ball on the ground?

Smith running it, instead of TimmyB (did he ever sign?)?

Hoover blocking for Smith? Getting rid of "Bar Dumb" Floyd?

Our OL getting aggressive, instead of constantly being in pass protection?

The new coaching staff? Paul B & Lamar re-united?

    A balanced offense?

I was concerned when Foster went down - now, I hope the kid rests and comes back healthy - and gets to watch Lamar become our single-season rushing leader...

I'd say it's comittment. The run game really hasn't gotten great until the 2nd half, when defenses finally got worn down.

But remember - we didn't run against detroit.

I think it's called 'going with what works'.

Having a committment to run is big. Having a decent back is just as big. Tsimunga had all the size and 40 tme you want, but he didn't hit the hole like Smith or Foster.

yep. You've got two guys there who hit a hole and see the hole. Neither necessarily require a fullback, both have good vision, and because of that they hit the hole at full speed. That simple difference is worth a couple of yards.

A commitment does help. We started doing better against the Ravens and Vikings (who were rated high against the run before Sunday) second half, but in the Lions game we were having a lot of success passing. When you can pass well, you tend to do that to get the game in hand quickly.
