Breaking News: Arrest warrant issued for Panthers WR Smith
    Updated at 5:17 p.m.

    11/22/2002

    By JIM GILCHRIEST / nbc6.com

An arrest warrant has been issued for Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith.

The warrant follows a police investigation after the Panthers suspended Smith for a fight with wide receiver Anthony Bright during a team meeting. Bright needed plastic surgery to repair damage done in the fight.

I doubt he'll lose any more time on the field due to this, unless the team decides to suspend him further or release him outright.

Dang, with as fast as Seattle picked up Terry, it makes me wish we would've benched him until the end of the season and got a draft pick for him.

Maybe we'll be able to pull that off with Steve Smith.

Smith works for the NFL and they do have violence policies that WILL be addressed. The Panthers do not have the final say.

This'll keep him in limbo long enough for a deal to be worked.

  8. Ugh!

Does anyone know why Smith and Bright got in the fight in the first place?

Bright asked to have a play rewound and reviewed again.
I've heard it's a play Smith dropped the ball. Smith, according to Byrd, said "we don't rewind for practice squadders" or something of that nature. Bright kept asking and the result was Bright getting his ass busted. There may have been some words in between where Bright contributed, but the word from Byrd seems to suggest that Anthony was trying to learn and Smith was being belligerent.

IMO, no one can be held responsible for Smith but Smith, but I do hold everyone else in that room, namely three guys that I respect very much on this team (Williamson, Walls, and Muhammad), partially responsible if they did not immediately tell Smith to shut the fuck up for disrespecting a teammate that way.
My guess is that no one did and I seriously doubt it will ever be known if anyone had. Williamson in particular should have had charge of the situation, unless this shit happens with Smith fairly often and no one thought it serious.

What are the chances that he’ll finish out the year for us and continue playing? Terry didn’t miss a beat earlier this year. I’m assuming things could be a little different in THIS case. Even if he could finish out the year with us I’m sure many of his “teammates” would not want him back. However, some might want him back there fielding kicks more than ever now.
I remember a rumor about how cocky he came off after his trip to Hawaii around the unheralded teammates who had cleared the path for him on those successful runbacks. I wonder if that’s when he started alienating himself from the team. This year some of those guys aren’t around and the ones that are just don’t seem to have their hearts in it like they used to. Maybe that’s one reason why Steveo has been doing so much sideways and backward running on returns. It reminds me of the final year Collins was here and scrambling for his life much of the time. That Oline would sorta drift off for a while sometimes during passing downs . . . hmmmm? Jeez, I wonder what the blocking would be like for Stevaphones returns when and IF he plays for us again this year ????????
