finishing 20th against the run is the worst we've done under Fox.
I was OK with our DTs in the first half of the year (and probably have statements all over this board from it), but not in the second half. The totals are what's important:

    Game 9 112 yards
    Game 10 130 yards
    Game 11 133 yards
    Game 12 145 yards
    Game 13 86 yards
    Game 14 121 yards
    Game 15 301 yards
    Game 16 60 yards

that's not good enough. Stopping the first rusher for around 100 doesn't matter if you're giving them 40-50 more to the backup. Part of it is we aren't making enough plays for a one-gap - 20th in stuffed plays, 19th in 10+ yard runs. And in these games we were scoring big points, so it's not as if the run was necessarily the most advantageous situation all the time.

We're 3.05 yards off right tackle - at Kemoeatu, I guess. That's 3rd in the league. Outside him, 4.01, 16th. But right in the middle, 4.75. 31st. off left tackle (which is at our right side), 4.48 is 20th. Off right end, 4.92 is 24th.

Funny enough, footballoutsiders ranked us 5th for adjusted pass rush.

So Kemo/Brayton were a better pair of run defenders than Lewis/Peppers.

I'm ignoring the LB's effect because the wide variation in what they could be doing wherease the DL is basically lined up in the same spot most of the time.

Up the middle the double Kemo with C/G and block Lewis with the G, the FB hits Beason and 5 yards later we are awful up the middle. Although it occurred to me that a draw may be classified in this category and we have up some long runs to that play this year.

So back to the commonly held view that Lewis is his best as a 3rd DT, playing on passing downs and using his quickness to provide a pass rush from the inside. And Kemo is solid against the run but physically limited by his huge ass. And Brayton is a good run defender but mediocre pass rusher.

Too much to read into from just a few stats but since it fit what I believe, what the hell :)

it leads toward that. It looks great if you say the 3ypc is Kemoeatu but then it doesn't explain us up the middle.

The stats really don't give you a complete picture. Other than that yes, we kinda suck.

We've all noted how Marshall's play last season wasn't that great. He played in the slot a lot, if my memory serves me properly. Is it possible that maybe moving to the outside would help him? Being that 3rd CB against the slot is pretty difficult and maybe Marshall would be better suited to line up outside? Any thoughts? Am I retarded?

What were our stats against the rush for the first 8 games? It seemed like we had a pretty big drop off about mid way through the season. The Detroit game seemed to be the turning point. When did Walker and the other depth get banged up?

Whether Lewis is starting or in the rotation he is still a good player to have. We could use another DT or two for the rotation but not necessarily a dramatic upgrade. If we had two more guys the quality of Kemo and Lewis I think we would be fine.

    I dunno.
He's a football player playing corner, which has always endeared him to fans. It seems like, coming out, he was a better man guy than zone, and so in theory he would do somewhat well in the nickel. But his flaw is instinct, so he might have to hang back more on the outside if he was playing a man-technique c3 drop.

But he was playing just fine last year, and Lucas was good till midseason. The bottom line is I can't find a reason for either of them to have declined.

    105, 119, 115, 118, 35, 142, 115, 50

it looks to have been a bit of an issue throughout. I believe the additional problems in the second half of the year were when gap control became a bigger issue with the LBs.

midseason.....common theme in the decline of our defense and defensive personnel. And it also coincides with our offense exploding.

Some kind of intangible dynamic where our offense starts putting up big numbers and our defense sorta starts taking it easier? Also maybe opposing offenses got more aggressive as they knew they'd have to put up 30+ to beat us....
