Yeah, I had to read his comment again.

We could do a one year extention, ala Moose 2004, for just a cap move for this season. That would give us cap relief, without any long term committment. Not sure if he'd sign up for that though.

Then again, I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a long term committment in an uncapped world. I wonder if the players realize this.

Do you think it dragging out makes it more likely for there to be a player or two coming back to us rather than just picks? I know we want a first round pick but instead of a couple of mid rounders maybe we get a solid rotational player for the DL since free agency will be dried up by the time this gets resolved...

no idea. It's in Peppers' hands to go get a franchise offer signed, or seek a trade. We have nothing in this part of the process to do other than attempt to coerce Peppers into a long term contract or to sign the tender to allow us the option of trading him. And I don't expect either.

It's hard to say, regarding additional compensation. It might net Peppers more money - it's safe to say he's earned a lot just by stonewalling. The Freeney deal made him richer. The Allen deal made him richer. The Haynesworth deal made him richer. Even the franchise tag makes him richer, because if he plays under it he'll inevitably get a bonus-baby year but still have pending free agency the year after.

As for player-for-player trade? Don't know, and wouldn't expect it. You could see us doing something creative, as this is certainly a unique situation - I doubt we'll ever have the situation of a franchise free agent wanting a trade in a year before the cap expires and two years before the CBA expires.

They do want to unload Lucas, so they could push that in. I've read a lot of "rumored" player for player trades including a first rounder and the logic and the value don't match up. I'd easily take Peppers and Lucas for Shaun Rogers and Cleveland's high 2 (since I can't find any reason to have them give us #5), but teams really just don't do that in the modern era.

Past that I wouldn't want to give up value from Peppers split up between a pick and a player - you only devalue both by doing so, in the form where a guy like Peppers does seem to require a first rounder head up and the value between ten picks in the first round is massive - and the value difference between a high 3rd and low really doesn't matter much. So diluting that out, really just doesn't help us.

I'm gonna wait and see on this one. It's unfortunate that we don't have the ability to do much right now, but this isn't the team we're fielding in August. I don't think things are dire, just pending. I worried about him taking forever to move (it's really been, what, a week?), too. But I don't worry of him holding out. I don't see where we would otherwise have made a significant move yet.

the entire comparison for trading a franchised DE, Allen last year, happened 4 days before the draft....I don't understand the panic at this point

    it's the cap.

So far the only contract I liked on a player I liked was Rocky Bernard, and he's over 30 and may end up being situational. There aren't many players that we would've made a big play for anyway, and honestly unless we know Peppers is gone for this upcoming year there's less needed force to replace.

We do need to change on D, and I don't think new DC/supposed scheme change will do it all. But the overall idea of panic (including "how are we going to sign our draft picks?") is a little heavy, imo.

Everyone is concerned about our DTs but I still think our starters are OK we just need some good depth for the rotation. I would have liked to have added a guy there by now but there is plenty of time for that.

I'm not buying the idea that the D is going to change anyway. I'll believe that when I see it.

How many times do people have to tell you that you're wrong and retarded before you just shut your fucking mouth, Mr. Kemocanbeapassrushertoo?

You have yet to grasp the concept that your disagreeing with me does not make me wrong. Obviously the Panthers brain trust agrees with me since they went into last season with Lewis and Kemo as our starters and show no sign of being desperate to change it.

it depends on how good the depth is. If Kemoeatu is one of two runstoppers, and Lewis is one of two pass rushers, that's fine.

Or, if we do something pretty fucking daring like go get Shaun Rogers, sure, the other two are fine and you draft a scrub to compete for #4.

Otherwise we need more. I don't think Robertson is it either.
