looks like, long haul, the team has to prepare for Peppers being here. Which is where I'm leaning toward anyway.

Yeah, it's a waste of cap space. It's a high dollar figure for no security. It also gives us a way of preparing for next year, I guess. If we stick with that, eventuallysomething will happen with Lucas to get a few minor moves done, and the draft picks won't be expensive as they are.

But if something does happen, there could be a few guys out there that can help us should we have cap.
Looks like Jason Taylor is going to wait a while to make a move. Bertrand Berry's still out there. Same for Torry Holt, who we have no business trading for, but who knows once he's available. Screw it. There aren't anywhere near enough balls but it's still fun.

Backup linemen should still be plentiful. Special teamers should be, too. Since all the DTs are gone, but we have starters, I imagine we were after youth anyway.

Biggest detriment is it'd be nice to have a vet CB if we're looking to drop Lucas. There's a statement Yas made a while back, saying he believed that if Lucas goes they'd still stand pat. I don't know how reliable that info is. I'm no more comfortable with Marshall as the starter, but if they do plan on going C2 more, it makes more sense.

I'm really over the philosophy of having ST's aces taking up roster spots. Outside of Long Snapper, Kicker, Punter... fuck it, who we got is who we got to play special teams.

oh yeah... also our FG Kicker is not our Kick Off Kicker too

My opinion is that the team does intend to keep Peppers and the "core" of players for one more Superbowl push before purging players going into the following year. In otherwords, the lack of activity is exactly what the team wants, IMO. Some minor reserve players will be brought in later, but any major splash will be via trade. A trade is becoming more and more unlikely as the FA period wears on.

they definitely want to keep things together (including Peppers, I assume, and if things weren't squeezed due to Peppers, Lucas as well). I don't know what their motivations are past this year, but I imagine they're more worried about preparing for the uncapped year and/or dealing with the potential lockout than dismantling.

Yeah, for all the complaining about losing our OL depth it should be noted only one of the 3 was drafted and the other 2 didn't even get signed until after training camp their first years here.

so if they cut Lucas, they get back what...7MM in cap space? With the signing of the draft picks, woudln't that essentially put the Panthers out of the running when it comes to the guys above unless they would take a vet minimum contract or something in that arena? Unless they really wanted to play in Charlotte, which is actually feasible with Holt, don't you think other teams would scoop them up before they'd land here with a little or much sweeter one/two year deal?

I think we only get $2.5mm back in cap space from cutting Lucas. His cap # is $7mm or something like that but we don't clear all of it by cutting...prorated bonus.

If Peppers plays '09 in Carolina, that would mean our starting lineups on both sides of the ball would be returning intact, except for maybe Lucas.

Heyzeus, if that is the case, even with cutting Lucas, could just signing the rookies eat up all that cap space?
