A short list, with some thoughts. Add or subtract at your leisure. A bit better than it was, still not very good.

    1. Kordell Stewart

As mentioned in meat's thread, there has been a lot of speculation about Kordell coming here. With all due respect to Dan Marino, he didn't think of this first link

Obviously Krydell doesn't inspire us all, as hot lava can be painful. It's a risk. He's very streaky and seems to need to be pushed to play well. In a simple system, he's had success, and I'm not sure we could be more simple. He's a vet and his recent play in relief of Maddox suggests he can be a manager. And he still has some legs.

    2. Mark Brunnell

The best passer, accurate, tall, can read, yada yada yada. Has taken a beating behind a bad line in recent years which has robbed him of his once Favre-like mobility. A bit streaky, and carries a bit of an uppity tude with teammates.

    3. Brain Griese

Another game manager type, his stats this year are better than you might think. Will be in his 7th year, so he's fairly young. Would he be another Collins though?

    4. Jake Plummer

The fake is very streaky, and seems to play better when forced. But he's not very consistent, accurate, and can't read worth a damn. He is fairly mobile, but a river gambler with poor judgement isn't the way to strike it rich.

    5. Kurt Warner

Due a big bonus, the Rams have a lot of options this off season. If that hand isn't looking good, they probably deal him then, which is why I'd be fearful.

Before this thread takes on a life of it's own 2 questions
    • What is the likelyhood of them coming here
    • and how much (picks, players, and/or money) would it cost

i think the panthers COULD get any of them. They will have the cash to spend.

and warner will probably be the only player requiring picks in return. jake is a ufa and look for the rest to be released.

Kordell is intriguing - even if he is so damn inconsitent passing. I still think Kordell could take a team to the playoffs and win it all. That team would need a damn good supporting cast but Kordell can make plays that win you games. He MUST learn to limit mistakes with his arm. If so, he can be a good QB with us.

Griese is still a descent QB and would be better than anyone here. Brunell tops the wish list - but something tells me that never happens. No idea why, just don't see it. I see Brunell returning closer to the left coast - Zona or maybe even Denver.

Warner won't happen because they will want compensation we won't give up.

I don't want Jake Plummer. He is at his best when the game is on the line. Too bad he puts the game on the line too often with poor play. He is maddenly inconsistent and I would never trust Jake to take me through the playoffs.

All in all, if Kordell wants to be here - he should push the Steelers to release him. We then sign him to an incentive laden deal and move on with Peete backing him up and teaching him to protect the ball as our starter.

We draft RB in round 1 and WR in round 2 and move on. We would be a lot better than we are today.

As much as I disagree with what I'm about to type...given the choices above, I'd take Kordel. I'm more concered with a RB though. We NEED a RB. Stephen Davis is my first choice, then LJ at #1 would be my second.

    I'd take:

1st Greise - Largest upside. I think his locker room and off field problems are magnafied from team losses. Shanny seems to have problems with his QB's. (Elway, Brister) I'd give up picks for Greise. Worth a 2nd + 4th.

2nd Brunell - Team leader, great QB, smart, probably has 3 or 4 years left behind the right line. I'm kinda thinking Brunell is not going anywhere though. Worth a 2nd.

3rd Kordell - Would give us a great weapon as a back-up. I've said before, with a solid running game, Kordell can lead this team. I might give a 4th, (Miami's)

4th Plummer - Needs a change of scenery and another team. Plummer can make things happen. I'd love to have this guy as a back-up behind Palmer. Best option if he's for free (ufa) and the right price.

10th Warner - I never thought he was much before. I think he's done.

I like the idea of bringing in someone...but I am not real sure about any of those guys. Stewart is young enough, but lacks consistency...Brunell is too old, IMO...Plummer, see Stewart...Greise has the skills, but the attitude concerns me...King WAS my top choice, now I am not so sure...Warner would be expensive and wouldn't like being the QB of a run happy offense.
In short, it depends on the OC situation. If Hennings stays, I'd be OK with Stewart/King/Greise and drafting LJ. If he goes, I'd still look for LJ, but the QB would depend on the OC.

Stewart-too streaky, never know if the Pro Bowl QB or Slash is gonna show up.

Plummer-will be way over priced and not a good fit for the offense

Brunell-beginning to become too brittle, with our O line, he doesn't finish the season.

Warner-see Brunell, he'll get cut before he's traded IMHO, no one wants to assume that cap hit, it'd be cheaper to sign him to a new deal.

Griese-intriguing only if he can put his off field problems behind him. If he can, a change in scenery would do wonders
    -------------------------

    Others to be considered

King-yeah he flopped in his one appearance, but was that from a lack of playing time or has he regressed that badly?

Batch-injury concerns, but he's had an entire year to get healthy.

Delahome-other than being a FA, nothing about him stands out.
    ------------------------

    Trade possibilties

Feely-shown himself to be a good game manager which is what we need, can Philly keep him, McNabb, and Detmer happy without causing too many waves? Philly may want too much for him though.

McMahon-definately not all world, but has shown some flashes
    probably cheaper to boot tradewise.

Bulger-should the Rams have a brain fart of epic preportions after he asks for big bucks as an RFA

    -----------------------

    May be Available

Couch-already having problems with the fans in Cleveland, a playoff win with Holcombe at the helm may be enough to cause the Browns to cut him loose.

Testaverde-dear God no. Too old, too slow, and his skills are rapidly evaporating.

Blake-still may have something in the tank. I'd have taken him over Peete this off season.

Green-he and KC may not see eye to eye on how much of a pay cut he's looking at and he may be released.

Dilfer-his injury and Hasselbeck's play the last few weeks may make him expendable.

That's about all I can think of anyway. Thoughts on the new names in the mix?
