The offer isn't about the amount of money, it's about how soon Varejo gets to be a UFA and then cash in with a Nene-esque contract.

being able to offer and offering are two different things. cleveland wasn't going to match any offer just to match it. but varejao didn't get a single offer. now obviously that doesn't mean he's worthless, but it means nobody was going to tie up money in offers when they could reasonably expect cleveland to match.

if somebody had thrown $8 million at him, cleveland probably wouldn't have matched -- unless maybe they figured they could do a sign-and-trade. but nobody that could do that thought he was worth it, so none of the big offers came in.

the cavs waited patiently for his market value to be assessed by the market and it was a lot less than anderson thought it would be.

better? i guess it depends on your orientation. he gets a shorter contract, which is what he wants, but i dunno if it's really better. it's probably pretty comparable to what he was offered by cleveland and if he'd taken that, his character wouldn't be in question.

he said that? i don't think he can be traded until next season at this point, tho. you can't trade a free agent for 90 days after you sign them, which puts him past the trade deadline for this season. sign-and-trades are an exception, but they are a weird case where the contract signing is actually contingent on the trade destination. but you can't sign and then later trade which is what is going to happen now that he's effectively signed.

nene-esque? if he was going to get nene-esque offers, you'd think they'd have come in already. he can opt out after 08-09, which means he'll be unrestricted... along with:

    zaza pzchulia
    drew gooden
    donyell marshall
    rasheed wallace
    jeff foster
    elton brand
    lamar odom
    stromile swift
    melvin ely
    adonal foyle
    shawn marion
    chris wilcox
    jorge carbajosa
    rasho nesterovic

now, not all of those guys are world beaters and most will probably stay put with contract extensions or lucrative deals, but that's a pretty good sized list of big men. of course, i suppose he could always opt to stay onboard for another year, tho i'm not clear on the timing of that.
