Source: ACC leaders agree to pursue Virginia Tech as possible 13th school|

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Atlantic Coast Conference presidents will invite Virginia Tech to join three other Big East schools in jumping to the ACC as part of its expansion plan, two sources told The Associated Press on Wednesday night.
The sources spoke to The AP on the condition they not be identified.
The decision to add Virginia Tech was made during a three-hour teleconference of nine league presidents on Wednesday after it appeared that the original expansion involving Miami, Boston College and Syracuse would not get the required seven votes for approval, one source with knowledge of the talks said.
The suggestion to reconsider the Hokies was made by Virginia president John T. Casteen III, who has supported including Virginia Tech in the plan throughout. After the Hokies were first rejected last month, he pledged to continue pushing for their inclusion.
Virginia Tech president Charles M. Steger was notified of the ACC’s change of heart in a meeting with Georgia Tech president T. Wayne Clough in Blacksburg, Va., on Wednesday night, the second source said.
Steger was expected to speak with members of the school’s Board of Visitors on Thursday to gauge their feelings on whether Virginia Tech should accept the offer.
Steger and others at Virginia Tech have been among the most outspoken critics of the ACC’s expansion plan, which would leave the remaining schools in a stripped down Big East with an uncertain athletic future. Virginia Tech is one of five Big East football schools that filed suit on June 6 against the ACC, Miami and Boston College trying to stop expansion.

Will these morons make a decision? I thought they might just take one (Miami) and now they are wanting four

I bet Virginia got them to cave in, they need that vote desperately.

Are you sure it's not sure they can keep an odd number of teams and continue the hoops tradition of the "Les Robinson Invitational" ??

Seriously, this whole thing is starting to remind of when David Stern 1st got his hands on the NBA. The unsuspecting fan who used to go be entertained by two teams playing a game on the court now was introduced to his "Who cares about the game, just shove names, images and faces down the fan's throat" approach.

Now, look where the product is....it sucks.

Just get it over with......take your 5 "super" conferences and go have fun. It may be a real wet dream for a couple of years.

The "average American sports fan" (aka- Wal Mart sports fan) will get excited when its first shoved down their throat. But just remember the "average American sports fan" has an incredibly short attention span.

actually it could be good for us if the acc takes 4 teams from the be because that will be the demise of the be, and cusa could actually become stronger..........

I'd tend to agree with you Savio. There may be the CUSA 4 previously agreed to together but in name CUSA will be gone. The Southern schools Tulane, UAB, Southern Miss will band together with someone too.

Another twist to the story. This must be what a girl feels like when she’s watching a soap opera.

Why would the ACC stop at 13? It would make for unbalanced divisions and tougher scheduling. If you’re going to go to 13 and take VT, why not go to 14 and take UConn? At least that would placate the basketball schools.

The longer this drags out, the less likely it is to happen. Someone, likely NC State or Wake, is now going to change to a no vote. They’ve been against the idea of adding VT from the start.

If Miami, BC, Syracuse, and VPI go to the Big East, the leftover football playing BE schools would be:

    West Virginia (awful in basketball)
Pitt (likely candidate for Big Ten expansion)
    Rutgers (terrible in football)
UConn (possible candidate for ACC expansion, football unproven)
Temple (already being expelled, horrible in football)

    The Big East is dead.

Swofford is grasping for straws now. I heard on the MSP this morning that the ACC by laws only require 6 votes to change by laws, and they might vote to amend the required yes votes for expansion to 6! Wow this thing has really exploded in his face.

My question is why are the hoop only schools sitting on their hands? Why not do thier own league where they NEVER have to worry about this again. I would assume this is not happening because everyone would have to pay penalties to leave their respective conferences. But if they wait for the Big Bang, they wont' owe any penalties.
