We are 1-1. One win, one loss. Period. I think we will bounce back big time next week. Then, 2-1. Simple math. FSU is 0-1, and they lost against a lesser team than UVA.

If Bunting is the Honest man i think he is , he should call a press conference and announce his resignation or fire his defensive coaching staff.

Or call the ragsdale hs team to come play on saturdays.( they might still get run all over , but i bet they make a few tackles.)

    UNC football, the pinata

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Home openers are such a gas. Students and alums gather on sunny afternoons to watch the good guys whack some poor, overmatched creampuff, and everybody feels better about overpaying for tickets and donations to the general fund.

Case in point: Virginia. The Cavaliers joyfully and productively ran up and down the field in front of a capacity crowd and sent everyone home giddy.

What made it all the sweeter was Saturday's creampuff du jour. Much to the delight of the Cavaliers faithful, North Carolina has free-fallen into the category of party pinata.

The Cavaliers delivered as thorough a poleaxing as ever occurred in the series' 109 years. You may fret about the occasional lapse in pass coverage or the absence of All-America tight end Heath Miller in the offensive scheme. But then, you probably griped that the barbecue was a little dry at the pre-game tailgate bash, too.

If Virginia Tech sits atop the list of schools that Cavalier Nation loves to beat, North Carolina isn't far behind. Maybe it has to do with losing so many basketball games to Dean Smith through the years, or the annoying fight song.

In any case, Virginia's football program has established a trend.

The Cavaliers have beaten Carolina 14 of the past 18 meetings and the last three, each of which has been increasingly one-sided. Since halftime of the 2002 game, the Cavaliers have outscored UNC 131-43.

A quick rundown of thorough: Virginia scored touchdowns the first seven times it touched the ball. The Cavaliers ran back one kickoff for a touchdown and came two feet short of running back another.

They elected to go for it on 4th-and-1 from their own 30 in the first half and ran wide to do so - sort of the football equivalent of one of those martial arts movies where one guy reaches into the other guy's chest, pulls out his beating heart, and shows it to him just before he dies.

"I think we executed almost to perfection, especially in the running department," quarterback Marques Hagans said of the offensive game plan. "That's something that we really wanted to establish early, and I think we established that very well early in the game."

Hagans, the ex-Hampton High Crabber making his first home start, wasn't called on to do a lot of heavy lifting. He was an efficient 10-for-12 for 209 yards, while the offensive line and running backs combined for 299 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.

"When the offense puts that many points up, it makes (the opponent) one-dimensional," Virginia defensive end Chris Canty said. "And when that happens with this kind of defense, the other team is in trouble."

Carolina was in trouble long before Saturday. How a program with the Tar Heels' tradition and facilities can be that bad is a subject best left to deep thinkers, but head coach John Bunting may want to consider a month-to-month lease on his living arrangements. Carolina is 3-17 versus I-A competition dating back to the midpoint of the 2002 season.

Division I-AA William and Mary schemed, game-planned and executed its way to 442 yards of offense in an eventual 49-38 loss to the Tar Heels the week before, not a good omen. Virginia didn't out-scheme UNC, instead taking the sock-full-of-nickels-upside-the-head approach.

"They had three base runs they ran against us," Bunting said. "We couldn't stop any of them. Those are the base runs we practiced all week. Nothing different."

Virginia coach Al Groh, a less giddy alum, enjoyed what he saw, but believes that early September results can be fool's gold. There are too many variables about yourself and your opponents to get a real fix on your capabilities.

"We're certainly not going to do any handsprings over it, but we're happy about it," Groh said. "I said last week: it's hard to win a game. I'm always happy when we win, and I don't throw any cold water on the parade. But that's what it was. It was a good win, but we've got a long way to go to accomplish something."
