update on Fukudome

Not to rain on your parade, but you never predicted (at least on TBR) that the Cubs would get Fukudome. In the few posts you made about him, the Cubs were only one of several teams you listed. And for the record, he's not "the next Ichiro." He's actually not much of a base-stealing threat and is more of a Paul O'Neil type hitter.

Oneill's lifetime batting average is .288, wheras fukudome's is .305.

Oneill hit 281 homers in 16 seasons. Fukudome has 192 in 8 seasons.

Oneill's career slugging % is .470. Fukudome's is .543.

in 16 season Oneill scored 1,041 runs. Fukudome has scored 713 in 8.

Oneill had 21 triples in 16 seasons. Fukudome has 38 in 8 seasons.

Also, Fukudome is a much more patient hitter. He has walked 571 times in 8 seasons, compared to Oneill's 892 in 16 seasons.

Although not as fast as Ichiro, he is certainly more of a threat to steal than Oneill.

when comparing homers, walks, runs, and triples especially, you have to remember that the Japanese league plays about 18 games less than MLB in a regular season. Over Fukudome's 8 seasons this means that he played in 144 less games than Oneill.

Colon, I think that Oneill is certainly a good player. But, comparing him to Fukudome is not even remotely close to a good comparison.

You also have to keep in mind that the Japanese league is basically AAA quality, which is why guys who fail in the major leagues can go over there and put up huge numbers. As great as Ichiro has been, none of the Japanese hitters who have come over to the major leagues have equaled the stats they put up back home, so expecting Fukudome to put up the same numbers here is just foolish. In time I think you'll find out that O'Neill is a very good comparison (he might be a little for your time anyway), as he was a very solid hitter who didn't hit a ton of home runs or steal many bases.

I realize that you're only 19 or whatever, and that emotionally you're more like 12, but I do hope that at some point in your development at college you actually progress some mentally and emotionally to the point that you can admit being wrong. You know that I'm right about the Japanese league being roughly equivalent to AAA, you know that I'm right about guys who aren't good enough to succeed in the major leagues doing very well over there, and you know that I'm right about no one from those Japanese leagues ever equaling their production after coming over here. Instead of trying to hide behind another flimsy excuse, try to act like an adult and acknowledge the truth.
