    Any Unitarians out there? I've been trying to figure where I fit within organized religion. While I don't really think I FIT in anywhere...I'm thinking this may be as close as there is for me.

    Aside from what I read on the internet...I'd like to hear from an actual Unitarian what they believe...

    I was very active in the Unitarian Church in the University area for several years. I've been inactive for the last 5.

    There really is no dogma in UU and, sometimes, very little common ground even within a congregation. Liberal Christians sitting beside neo-pagans sitting beside a Zorastarian who is next to an athiest. It's a wierd mix but that depends on the congregation. More than any other denomination, each church or fellowship is very different in how it operates.

    All that is asked of a UU is to try to abide by and affirm the Covenant

    • The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
    • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
    • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
    • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
    • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
    • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
    • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
    That is the common ground for a UU. Not the particulars of one's beliefs on religion or spirituality.

    I know someone that went to a UU church about 8 years ago. One day she looked around and noticed it was nothing but gay couples. Made her an athiest.

    Wyman Rousseau is still the minister there and lives in Davis Lake. Wonderful man.

    Playa, I'm not sure how the demos are currently at PUUC. When I was a member it was mainly 30-50 year old married couples. UU's are accepting of gay and lesbians so it's not unusual to find a high percentage in any given congregation. Also not unusual to find quite a few athiests either.

    I used to be a member of Myers Park Baptist. Believe it or not...that is a VERY liberal church. I actually grew up in that church. When I was 13 my family decided it was too far (we lived in Rock Hill).

    My wife and I joined when we moved to Charlotte. It was Builder and Fred's heaven. Actually it was such a high percentage that it took away from the church. It was all we noticed.

    I'm NOT looking for a House of Queers. Think I'll still give the UU church a shot.

    queers are always pushing the Unitarian faith. I believe, but may be wrong, that MCC churches are also based lightly on Unitarian beliefs based on what Vito wrote as well as pulling from Catholic, and more heavily, Episcapalian (sp? it's late). Still, the core belief remains the same. Jesus Christ died for your sins. Repentance is the only true way to heaven. They just have looser versions of "sin" than most churches.
