The title of that book is surprising. I've never associated violence with Mormonism.

Me neither. I just associate it with female nymphomaniac sex fiends whose exploits would turn Jenna Jameson's hair white. That and disturbing whitebread suburban people who smile too much for no reason.

If you ever get a chance to go to Salt Lake City do so. Tour the temple and do all the touristy stuff. Then go around and just observe things about the city. Mormonism has really changed what types f business' are there and the layout of where they are. That city has like 1 Starbucks...and beside any coffee shop is a place called SLC Bean Company. Most the drink dountains have nothing but Powerade, all because caffeine is a sin. Lots of stuff like that. I talked to a few people who still thought that the mormons should have gone to war with the US in the 1880s when Brigham Young put the Mormon army at Utah's borders during what amounted to a coup of the state government. (I think it was the 1880s)

    TimTam -

thanks for advice on touring mormon sites, etc. in SLC. i was there many years ago to ski alta and snowbird ... but i didn't do any touring. will definitely include that on the next trip!

you are off a bit on those dates. most stuff i've seen dates the Utah War to 1857 and 1858. this was partly the result of the fancher wagon train massacre in september, 1857.

krakauer's book describes the mountain meadows massacre. more info on that here too - http://historytogo.utah.gov/mtmeadows.html
