    Too many commuter students

I think that is a great part of the support problem. People don't feel a real tie to the school if they only come to campus like going to work. Halton Arena is a big improvement because at least the 49ers aren't playing games off campus too.

I enjoyed my undergraduate education at UNCC a hell of a lot more than I have graduate school at ECU, but by the same token, I never felt any tie whatsoever to UNCC athletics, but have attended pretty much every football game here (along with some of the other sports) because the university puts such a big emphasis on it. One of the good things they do here is to have a nice brick electronic billboard at the corner of Charles and Greenville Blvd which lets you know what sports are having games and when. UNCC could easily do something similar on 49, but I never had a clue when anything was going on over there.

Beyond that, yeah, I think the commuter issue played a big role as well. There wasn't a lot of incentive for me to drive 40 minutes for a game, as opposed to the 1 minute it takes me at ECU.

granted I went mainly to night school at UNCC but I never knew when any games were going on either, unless it was Cincinnati.

they had a little fold up sign on the way from the Mallard Creek parking to the classrooms. thats about all I ever saw.

    Team Handball .... what a riot ...

Seriously, the NCAA approved Team Handball as a women's sport 5 years ago and allotted 10 scholarship slots to the sport under Title IX ...

... and the NCAA has been tracking participation in all sports. To date, there isn't a single college playing Team Handball as an offical collegiate sport, but they are leaving it on the books and still have allotted potential scholarships for it.

    Can you say "STUPID".

The NCAA has women's team handball listed because it is an Olympic sport.

I never understood the lack of marketing.

One thing I don't understand (among many others)

Why do fans in the Charlotte area have such lack of respect for the 49ers? Of course Cornbread Maxwell on the radio certainly doesn't help. I don't know if I have heard a more arrogant person on the radio this side of Hayseed. Does Charlotte have a lack of identity? You hear all these community college references and nothing could be further from the truth.

Basically it's the whole ACC domination of the local market. ACC's been around almost as long as UNCC has. The ACC has had some great teams over the years and that has built a loyal fan base. There's also the ignorant fans that refuse to accept any team that's not in the ACC as being competitive. All Charlotte has to do is keep winning and the fan base/respect will come. Going to the tournament 5 out of the last 7 years is just a start. Once we get there, we need to advance. Winning cures all ills.

I would say from a sports aspect,
all the people who went to other(ACC) schools look down their nose at UNCC.

a lot of the people who went to UNCC are hyper-sensitive about "lack of respect" from ACC schools

UNCC does needs to market itself better. go to GBoro, CH, RDU there are billboards and stuff everywhere promoting the colleges. as far as the identity thing, yeah they do. renaming the team Charlotte instead of UNCC showed that. (I understand why they did it,with media calling the UNC an stuff)

I thing the 49'rs have done well the last 5-8 years. going to CUSA helped out a lot. Leaving CUSA kind of set them back, IMO.

Can't say I disagree totally but staying in the new CUSA would have really set us back.
