Exhibition coming to Ashbrook UNC seniors coming to Gastonia

Tryouts for opposing All-Star team on Thursday at York Chester Middle School

BY PHILLIP GARDNER Gazette Sports Reporter

GASTONIA — Five seniors from North Carolina’s NCAA men’s basketball championship team will visit Gastonia next week to participate in an all-star game.
Jackie Manuel, Melvin Scott, Jawad Williams, Charlie Everett and C.J. Hooker will take on the Gastonia All-Stars — a group of local players yet to be selected — 7:30 p.m. April 21 at Ashbrook High School.
The event will include a dunk contest and autograph session.
Rob Sumner, a UNC graduate and member of Ashbrook’s 1971 state runner-up basketball team, will organize and coach the local team. Tryouts for the team will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday at York Chester Middle School.
“We’re going to put a team together that hopefully will give them some competition,” Sumner said. “Gastonia has some talent but you are talking about the national champions.”
At halftime of the all-star game, a representative from each of Gaston County’s high schools will receive two attempts during a dunk contest to be judged by Scott. The North Carolina players will be available for autographs after the game.
Advance tickets are available for $10 from The Sports Center, Essic Sport Shop and Medical Center Pharmacy beginning Wednesday. Game officials expect to sell all 1,000 tickets.
Proceeds from the game will benefit the Gastonia Mountaineers 15-and-under AAU basketball team. The Ashbrook basketball program will receive proceeds from the concession stand.

As a kid I remember when these senior games were not just UNC players but ACC or Big Four players that would tour around after the season was over - it would be the ACC seniors against the local yokels. Those were great games to catch some autographs and see the "stars" up close and personal.
