    I'd say they were the champions, fred.

    There were plenty of people who thought that UNC was the best team going into the tourney. Winning by beating the other team that everyone thought was the best just confirmed it.

    I bet pravda in 1980 sounded a lot like you do know.....

    I can't produce the contract for the BCS poll either but the coaches are contractually obligated to vote for the winner there as well. it has been heavily covered in the media. Every final poll for the past 5 years has been unanimous. there is a reason for that.

    And all I am saying is there is a difference between champions and best team. UNC can argue they were the best team but so can a hand full of other teams. The trophy is just a piece of their argument and, this year, not an overwhelming one.

    illinois was the best team for this season. UNC was just their Santa Clara.

    Nope, the '91 Trophy is certainly worthless. Claiming a National Championship after one of the biggest fixes in sports history is shameless.

    Not really. There was no doubt in 91 UNLV was the best team.Duke just happened to be the champion. I won't say Duke was the best team in 91. Same with 83. I would argue Duke was the best in 86 and 99 even though they weren't champs.
