is UFC really a sport? It is more violent than boxing, which means its 2 guys kicking each others asses, but does that make it sport?

I am just askin, because to me, it seems like legal street fighting (since both are paid to do it).

Golf, figure skating, bowling--not sports IMO. Competitions, but not sports, but they do fall under that category in my line of work.

Just wondering how others felt about this.

Back on thread, I have no idea who those guys are, or who will beat who. They could all kill 99% of the people on this board, I bet.

UFC used to be street fighting a long time ago, but now there are set rules and a ref who makes sure things don't get out of hand. It's pretty enthralling, really, although I don't know if that says something bad about me or our society. Anyway, I won't pay for anything on ppv, but I enjoyed the free fights tonight on Spike.

I find myself watching it for about 10 minutes, because of the violent nature of it, but, then a commercial hits, and I check out something else....I might find my way back to it later though.

I don't dislike it, just don't know if it qualifies as "sport"...but ref and rules help it fall into that category.

Yeah, it's definitely a spot. Some of the best fighters aren't even good punchers, they're just good at takedowns and submissions.

sport of the future? maybe, 3rd most popular spectator sport in Japan according to the shootfighting folk.

Seeing how we always seem to come back to these same arguments of "martial arts" vs. "martial sports"
    -=-=-=-=-

UFC conducts its bouts under rules that are becoming widely accepted as industry standards in commission states. Here is a partial list of UFC do's and don'ts:

    What's legal
    Punching
    Elbowing
    Kicking and kneeing standing fighters
    Wrestling takedowns and throws
    Olympic judo-style chokes
    Submission joint locks

    What's not
    Head butts
    Eye gouging
    Hair-pulling
    Groin strikes
Strikes to the spine or back of the head
Kicking, kneeing or stomping a grounded opponent
    Holding the fence for leverage
    Throat strikes
