Well, there are more differences than that. Particuarly in what they left out. The confrontation between Sarouman and Galdalf at the end of part one, and Frodo getting captured at the end of part two.
Which will apparently now happen in the Return of the King.

Like most movies, a lot of this was done due to time constraints. As presented, the movie is still logical and now does not take 12 hours to tell.

It was twenty something years ago that I read it all. I can't remember that much so I am not getting pissed off by the changes. I just like it when the ass kickin' starts :D

since when does any movie really match the book?

two towers was excellently done and it makes the first episode have some continuity and fluidity. further, it is making a bundle in the box office...and rightfully so!

one prolly woulda been better off not reading and watching anything bec they never actually match! case in point, "bridges of madison county." these two are not even close! the poetry was totally lost! the book was beautiful bec of the poetry.

these are two different mediums. one cannot expect it to match.

    Welcome, NC

While I kinda agree with Couz's rant, I just got back from it and still loved the movie. The special effects were fantastic, the scenery was gorgeous, and at least it still made sense. I kinda liked the thing with Arwen and Aragorn and don't remember that part from the book. I thought I was gonna faint from lovestruckedness watching Liv Tyler playing Arwen. :mushy: :mushy: :mushy:

All that being said, it seems they could have stayed with the storyline a little better, some of the stuff they substituted could just as easily been the same as the book.

But now I HAVE to go to New Zealand sometime. I've never seen such beautiful landscapes. :)

The love story bit was actually a part of a seperate book written by Tolkien.

  6. There were some things that were a little off, but all in all, they got the idea across. I was a little uncertain as to why the elves showed up at helms deep. Who told them to show up there?

The extended version of the fellowship adds a lot of the stuff they left out of the first one -- namely aragorn being a little more mysterious (you only know him as "strider" for the longest time) and lothlorien is back to being an important milestone.

The arwen crap in this movie (that people seem to love so much) is a direct result of building up arwen too much in the first movie (which I could have lived without). That's all I'll say about that so as I don't spoil stuff for others.

I could have lived without some of the dwarf jokes -- namely when they're facing certain death. Also, the legolas surfing scene was just a little too xgames for my taste.

Gollum was fantastic. The best facial animation and rendering I've ever seen. That should win somebody an award of some kind.

I'm curious what the extended version of this movie will be like. Maybe they'll add back some of the ent stuff -- you just can't have longwindedness in a movie that's already 3 hours long.

Honeygirl lives in a awesome place. She said there were only four million residents... N.C. had nine million at last count.

I'm going to move there in my next life.

Awesome movie. You are right, there are quite a few differences between the books and Jackson's adaptation...but fuck it. I like em both.

Surfer, I spent 10 days in New Zealand several years back. Real cool place. Unbelievable landscapes. I never made it to the South Island. I believe that is where the movie was filmed.

Worth the trip, but the flight is miserable.

The Arwen story is in the appendices of the LOTR.

As far as the complaints about the movie not matching the book then you guys should really complain about Forrest Gump. That movie was no where close to the book. If you want a movie to match the book then watch the first Harry Potter. That movie was too close to the book. Kind of ruined any suspense as to what was going to happen.

All in all I think everything will come together in Return of the King.
